Anyone has instructions or a DIY on how to change the P/S pump and Reservoir?

It should be here friday and I'm gonna tear into it over the weekend. Any instructions would be helpful. If you have a DIY or a manual that goes over it please help me out.

Thanks,

Adam

Thank You again Sir

Since I don't want to just take and would like to also cotribute to the forums. I was able to track down a TSB on replacing the reservoir. If anyone is interested or would like to host it for the thread PM me and I'll send you a pdf.

So, I tore into it today. It was actually quite easy, changing the pump and a reservoir. I took some pics and will do a basic writeup later on, however changing the pump and the reservoir yielded no results. I'm on my way to the garage to take a closer look at the lines as it seems like they might be clogged. The steering rack was replaced too. No idea why but they might be. I think the pump is building a lot of pressure and that pressure is not going anywhere as it got pretty hot in no time.

UPDATE:

It's 4:00am and I'm beat. So I went to test the lines and the retrnline was fine. Now the high presure line seemed to be blocked. I tried to push whatever was there through with pressurized air from the compressor but no luck. So I started taking it apart into sections and tearing my hair looking at the manual/catalog... Well as it turns out, you will not find this in the manual, the High Pressure line at the end that goes into the steering rack has a little check valve made out of a little piece of plastic and a tiny spring.

I guess when the car got hit, and since the old steering rack got mangled up pretty bad, I assume, that the pressure spike, forced the little plastic valve piece into the tube. There was absolutelly no luck trying to make that darn thing come out. 200psi of air didn't budge. I finally ended up cutting that end piece off and just for the hell of it I had to use a little punch to get it out. Now I just looked up the price of the new line. Pelican Parts has it for about $300 . I really hope this is it. I mean this system is not really that complicated. Looks like I'll have a left over reservoir for spares or to sell.

Thanks for your update. This seems like a valuable lesson for the board. If you make a DIY thread on this topic, that would be very helpful.

Currently I'm having issues with my steering making noises at slow speed. I removed the noise shield under the car and checked and tightened everything I could see. It didn't do anything but make the noise worse. While down there tho, I saw the power steering system. I was thinking about this thread, and hoping I didn't have to change it. Just making sure I got it right, but that is the long silver piece that is above the front differential?

From what you're describing, you looked at the Rack and Pinion/Steering Gear, since that is located in the front. You might want to check fluid levels. The rack itself rarely whines, make sure that when it happens the noise comes from the front before you tear into things.

Interesting thread. I will be looking for your write-up with pictures.

What made you decide to change everything out?

Well the car was after an accident and the steering rack was fubar. I replaced the rack but as you can see in my other/previous thread I had some issues with what I thought was the pump/reservoir. I studied the diagrams for the PS system and didn't see anything else to possibly go wrong, so as some suggested I replaced the Pump and Reservoir.

As it turns out, the Pump and Reservoir were ok, but the valve in the line was stuck causing the pump to act funny since the pressure had nowhere to go. I should have the line tommorow as I just specialordered it from the stealer and will post an update tommorow. Looks like replacing that line will be more complicated than the whole pump swap.

I'll edit this with media in a bit. Here's the step by step it's actually quite easy if you are mechanically inclined. I'm not gonna go into details on Air Filter or Belt removal as I think that if you cannot master this one yourself you got no business going further I take no responsibility if you damage something or hurt yourself. (There is excellend writeups on rennlist that covers these 2 steps)

1. Remove the Air Filter Assembly

2. Remove the 2 bolts retaining the Y-pipe, Loosen 1 clamp by the throttle body, disconnect the boost hoses from the y pipe, slide off a clamp on the drivers side connecting the F pipe, remove 1 bolt attaching the AC clamp to y pipe. Yank the Y pipe but be careful as just under the throttle body there's a tiny vacum tube going to a selenoid that needs to be disconnected.

3. Losen the bolts to the Pumps pulley

4. Release the belt ( you dont have to remove it but just slide it of off the pulley)

5. Remove the pulley. It will come out but you might have to stick your hand behind ther pulley to turn the pumo 1/3 of a turn to clear the frame.

6. Look closely for a wire that goes to the front of the AC compressors clutch. This will determine if you can remove the reservoir and pump as one complete assembly. If the wire passes between the pump and the reservoir you will have to remove them seperatelly.

7. Have plenty of rags as there will be some spillage and Pentosin is not nice to rubber hoses. If it comes in contact with coolant/boost hoses wipe it off and rinse with water immidiatelly.

8. Suck out as much fluid as possible from the reservoir. I used a nice $20 vacum pump with a little jar used primarely for bleeding brakes. At one point you will notice that you cannot go any deeper because of the strainer. I noticed that if you stick your finger in there you can patiently wiggle it out. Just try not to damage it so be gentle Once the strainer is out siphon the rest of the fluid out of the reservoir. The more you get out the less of a mess.

IF REMOVING THE RESERVOIR SEPERATELY

9a. Remove the return line going into the lid of the reservoir by pressing in the red ring and pulling on it at the same time. It should release like butter.

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=BOT4ZQSURnQ

9b. Remove 1X 10mm bolt hidden behind the reservoir. Remove the 2 13mm bolts on both sides of the reservoir. (the one on the drivers side is a pita to get to, I'll post a video of my wrench rig that I used to get it out).

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=X1Pol7_d_TI

9c. With the rags ready, yank the reservoir sttright up and fish it out to safety

9d. Install in reverse order.

IF REMOVING RESERVOIR AND PUMP AS AN ASSEMBLY

9a. Remove the return line going into the lid of the reservoir by pressing in the red ring and pulling on it at the same time. It should release like butter.

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=BOT4ZQSURnQ

9b.Unscrew the hi pressure line from the pump at the "bronze" junction using 2 flat 15mm wrenches. Have rags ready and i used the vacum pump to keep suckingg out the fluid until it stopped draining.

9c. Unscrew the 3 bolts that attach the pump to the bracket. Yes there's 3...the third one is hidden under the pump shaft and is hard to get to. I used my "wrench rig" to get to it.

9d. Remove the 2 13mm bolts on both sides of the reservoir. (the one on the drivers side is a pita to get to, I'll post a video of my wrench rig that I used to get it out).

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=X1Pol7_d_TI

9e. Now you should be able to lift the pump(you might have to pull on the AC lines to get clearance) to clear the bracket, turn it clockwise 1/4 turn vetrically, and slide it towards you from the bottom (pump first).

Installation is in reverse order.
