Might have found cause of 3rd gear failure

I'm posting this thread in part to share information but also for advise.

I posted a couple of weeks ago that I destroyed third gear twice. Both times the gears just shredded. Everything else in the tranny was fine including all the other gears and the synchros.

My mechanic was insisting that both times were because of how hard I'm driving the car. I personally couldn't accept that answer given how soon after the first repair that the gear let go again. My mechanic told me he consulted with Brian Copans and that Brian agreed the problem was the stock third gear which they advised to replace with very expensive Porsche Motorsport gears.

Today he called me and said he found a hairline fracture in the front tranny case right where the bearing sleeves are. He says that he's sure it wasn't there the first time and that probably metal from the gear got between the other gears and forced them apart causing the crack in the case.

I guess I'm a little worried at this point. I'm not sure what to beleive or what to do. What do you guys think?

I believe you should just ship your whole tranny to Brian and get a definitive diagnose and fix for it. you will save lots $ and headaches in the future.

I agree with Vince that would be one way to obtain piece of mind.

second option, get a GT2 tranny from UMW

most expensive is rebuild the transmission as a "super" transmission as I have done.

There are many many here that track hard and tons of miles. I have not heard of many tranny problems and in general a well driven car with proper rev matched shifts at the track in this car is not a weak point in the drivetrain.

get a rebuilt tranny and get to Daytona with us this month!!!!

6 days away and still waiting on parts. The cracked tranny case is going to be replaced with a GT3 version which is already plumbed for a cooler. If the parts are in by Monday I still have a chance of making it. Otherwise
