Started New Project!

Just started Winter project, I know it's not officially Winter, but its cold and wet enough over here. Yeah, OK its like that all the time! So, thanks to everyone for advice & pointers a few weeks ago on removing the turbos - knowledge is power! So far so good with no major problems although I had to replace the oil breather pipes from the catch tanks. Spark plugs are changed (Bosch FR6 LDC) and now I'm just waiting for turbos to be returned (ported & balanced K16/24s with upgraded wastegates) then I'm on to the easy bit of bolting it all back together. Ive also got a pair of FVD sport intercoolers to fit, then a quick reflash using FVD software and I'll see what happens Just a quick question, where do I find the relay for the starter motor? Cheers, Andy.

Looks like fun! We did our own turbo install also. You really do appreciate, and hate LOL, some of the way things on these cars are engineered.

Apologies, when I said starter motor relay I meant fuel pump relay, it had been a long day! Just to prime the new turbos with oil, cheers

Thumbs up

Sorry, I've been meaning to post the rest of this thread for a while now. Original turbos were removed with minimal of fuss and drama. Drain plugs on oil tanks were VERY tight. Ended up welding an allen key in to remove them and buying new plugs and seals! Oil feed and return pipes needed only slight encouragement but breather pipes on both sides were properly stuck. The screw in ends were seized to the pipes themselves and were turning the whole thing as they were unscrewed. A hack saw and new pipes solved this! Everything else was fairly textbook. Putting everything back together was the easy bit as its all new and I wasn,t dealing with rusty nuts and bolts (must be Porsche cutting costs, I've seen 15 year old Land Rovers in better condition than this). All new gakets, seals and o rings were used for exhaust, headers, check valves, tanks etc. and I even treated myself to a new pair of side heat shields as the originals were completely knackered. Fitted intercoolers and all hoses, airbox. rear bumper, back lights and rear arch liners in that order. Then plugged in laptop and reflashed using an appropriate programme sent by email from FVD in Germany, (very simple process and highly recomended, and its futureproof. Once you have the software you have access to FVD's vast library of programmes and you can reflash as many times as you like at no additional cost). And that was it..job done, total spanner time about 15 hours, no world records but very satisfying. And does it work, oh yes, boost pressure is instant from the time you touch the throttle and relentless up to a maximum of 1.2 bar. At full tilt things in front get very large, very quickly! Very, very impressed, a superb set up for ultimate road use. Thanks to everyone on the forum for advice and pointers before I started this project, the knowledge on here is priceless and if I can do it anyone can, I work in an office for godsake!.. cheers Andy.

Looking good, bro!! Doing the install is tricky at times, but is definitely rewarding.

The k16/24's are truly great turbos. It seems like people aren't going that route much anymore, but as you've found out, they are a great upgrade. Lag isn't much more than stock k16's, but they provide great midrange and top-end power. They also drive like stock, and the car is as refined as the day you bought it, which is a plus for many people.

The pics look great...everything is so shiny, and the Europipe looks great too...what a great exhaust!!

Congrats, and enjoy in good health!!

Thanks mate,

Its certainly rewarding and I can put up with the scraped knuckles and squashed fingers when I think of all the cash I've saved compared to if I had let an Independent or even a main stealer do the job! Plus I am sure that I did a much more thorough job than any one else could have done as I was not working against the clock!
