Thrashed a modded Ducati 996!

The ducati 999 is the nicest bike ever made in my opinion. I would rather have a 999 than a 1098. The 999 was ahead of its time in design, it should have been produced after the current series and its unmistakeably ducati...whereas there are instances a 1098 may be confused for a cbr from afar.

Actually I did the same thing with a Busa from a roll in 2nd gear... We were side by side approaching a light when it turned green. We were doing about 30MPH and both coasting down... He nailed it, as did I, and we both ran thru the gears... I dropped him by over a bike length by 4th... He followed me at the next exit and followed me to the parkinglot where I was going and I was like "Hmmm this could get ugly".
He was very cool, very gracious and very much wanted to see under the hood... So I showed him the CD changer!

now that was funny...When I was at the drag race track, the inspection station guy asked to see under the hood and went to the front of the car(seriously), so I opened the hood and showed him the CD changer... His buddies were all laughing at him.
Great kills.

My younger brother is picking up an 848 in Red possibly the 2009 or 2010 model. He talks about the Full Termi...

I'm actually thinking about possibly getting an ST4 come spring... Looking for something a bit on the sport-touring side of things and I hate my business partners multistrada...But then again, I've never owned a Vtwin, so maybe it's just me!
The ST4 is a slick looking rig though!

It boils down to preferences. We all have them... Unfortunately sales numbers don't lie and Ducati wanted to increase them over what they saw with 999. Three things are unmistakable Ducati superbike. Well actually five. The sound, a vtwin powerplant, dual horizontal headlights, single sided swingarm, and the under seat exhaust. You can't change that recipe. It's what made the original 916 a superbike icon. The 999 was the equivalent of "New Coke". It was great if you had never has the original
Point taken. With regards to the sales numbers, keep in mind that they lowered the msrp on the 1098 to be less of a jump from japanese liters while japanese increased in general. As for the 916, it was aesthetically like nothing out there when it came out.. a breakthrough of a bike. Dont get me wrong, I LOVE the new bike.. but to me, it just doesnt stand out as much looks wise (not incl. the tricolore).

I agree with Soothsayer.
The decision to change models was an economical one. The 999 series was extremely expensive to produce and had an associated price tag, something that translated in less sales.
I picked up my tricked out 999S about a year ago and paid 13K for the bike. The original owner had about 27K in the bike.
Anybody who can get their hands on a clean 999S or R should do it. It's the steal of a lifetime.
There is a huge quality difference compared to the new bikes, which becomes very apparent during Ducati club meet-ups. Recently my bike was parked next to a new 848. The fit and finish of the new model was so and so, and the rear section looked as if it was made out of card board paper.
Every time I go into my garage, I've got the option to drive my Turbo or my Ducati. I feel like a blessed man, since both vehicles put a smile on my face.
Attached some pics of my Duc and my (old) Porsche.

Whew...reading the title of this thread scared me for a second, I thought someone crashed!! Good kill, though. The 996's didn't have a whole lot of straight line power....it would be interesting to see how your times on the track would compare with his.
I've owned a few Ducs before (996, 749S, and currently a couple modded Monsters), and really find them to be a step above the Japanese bike manufacturers (owned an SV650, RC51 and Ninja 250 ). I believe that I will own Ducatis for as long as they make them, and may never own another brand.
As far as their sport bikes go, the new 10 and 8 series are by far my favorite and I'm looking forward to picking one up (hopefully soon). I enjoyed my 749S, though, as it was my SharkSkinz'd track demon....even if it isn't the best looking bike they've ever made. I don't have much use for a sport bike at the moment, though, so the Monsters are getting me by until I get the itch again...
