What would YOU do...

Most of you have read my post... catastrophic engine failure. I'm looking at my options for a rebuild/replacement. I've talked to Kevin @ UMW and I've also e-mailed Todd @ Protomotive and have gotten some $$$$$ numbers. I'm even considering a good low miliage used engine, but haven't done anything yet. The truth is I want to move up to a 997TT in 18 - 24 months and see my 996TT as a short term car now. I'm open to any all suggestions at this point. The good... the bad... as I've already been there & seen the ugly! PM me if you wish! Thanks guys!!!

Put it back as close to stock as possible then sell it after a few months to get a 997TT.

PeterK is infamous around these parts
Buy a used engine from a wrecker like LA dismantlers and be done with it.

Or you can try to sell your car as is.

If your planning on doing the same kit on the new motor make sure you have a qualified person doing the install.... I wish someone would take the time to explain and or walk you thru the install as Im sure you had more then one question- all this could have been avoided...
get a used motor, install the kit again, make sure its 100% before you get on it... you will have a blast....

No. I haven't done anything w/the car yet... it's still setting in the garage in the same spot while I come up w/a plan.

If your plan is to get a 997 shortly, I'd get a used motor, make sure it's running right and then sell it. Make sure you disclose to the buyer the issue you had and how you fixed it. Plan on taking a loss and then move forward. Good luck with whatever you decide.

18-24 months is quite a bit of time. I'd do whichever can position you to enjoy the car for the least amount of investment possible. If it where my car I'd ignore the timeframe and build the current engine up, but that option will likely be a bit costlier and take a bit longer. The end result is the availability to enjoy the horsepower you have now, while leaving your options open should you decide you want more power 6-8 months from now.

It seems difficult to me to make any plans until you are sure the engine is a total loss...

Indeed, I think any sort of planning is futile at this stage. Lets wait till we learn more on the status of the engine.

I would build that engine ground up the right way with a reputable tuner, I would never sell a 996TT. When you can modify a 996TT and smack the 997TT's why bother.

1. Define your goals. Modern/newest versus best bang for buck.... The super high HP cars lose, per many, some liveability. Do you want that? Do you want a fast car that can be used all the time? chip/exhaust 997TT?

2. Pick a tuner you feel is honest. Have THEM put the car together. Make sure they are bonded. Etc.

3. Put 2x whatever you think a car costs to maintain into a bank account (for a year) as a just in case and/or a new engine if you go over 600hp...just in case.

4. If I melted an engine down, I'd look hard at what it was I "needed" out of that to warrant such a terrible waste of money in a world with a lot of suffering...sounds trite, but I'd look at that even if others' fault as a huge thing that I drove home, that I caused at some level, and what a huge waste. I'd soul search and probably unload the car and take a few months off to review and perhaps re-connect with the more important stuff in life: family, charity, education, and art.

Did you engine get torn down yet????

Two options in my mind:

1. Return it to stock with a crate motor.

2. Built motor, go all out with mods SUITABLE FOR YOU DESIRES, packaged and installed by a qualified tuner.

Any 'cheap' options - recycler motor, used, whatever- will make resale even MORE painful.

You should know that the return on your mod dollars will be around 25% in two years.

Personally, if 18-24 months is really your horizon, modding the car will be very cost INeffective.

If the money isn't a big deal, just dump the 996 and get the 997 now..if you apply the money you will loose in depreciation NOW it might make more sense.

I have a crate motor that I bought when I started my build and i was told it would be a year I didn't want to go that long with out a TT, instead bought a another TT to drive while the other car was getting the work done.PM when you know if you need a new motor or not, we can go from there, I don't really want to sell it until the other car is done but hey lets just see and go from there.
