Lined up with a white SLR at red light today. The guy (Japanese gangster looking dude ... I'm serious) gave me the "let's go" look and we were on. Got the jump on him in 1st, but at the end of 2nd gear he started pulling on me and by the time we slowed down (think it was around 180km/h?) he was ~3 car lengths ahead of me.

Is it to be expected? Are SLRs really that fast? Would I be able to hang with him with K24/18g or GT28 hybrid?

 

Oh yea they are pretty quick! before i did the 24-18 I was about 2-3 cars behide my buddy's SLR and now i am 2+ in front of him, so you do the Math.

 

the SLR is one of the fastest cars in the world. It is very well designed and puts out an honest 640 hp. I have seen one put down an honest 550 rwhp at sea level on 93 octane. He probably had about 40-50 whp on you, so it makes sense. Also, from what I remember from the dyno results, it had a really fat torque curve. if you were within 3 car lengths you did good.

Also his car is half a million dollars

 

Outcome seems correct.
Next step would be larger turbos (you mentioned) and some fueling and
you could turn the tables. SLR's are good dragsters but from a roll...

I ran a black SLR in the Galleria area of Houston, however I don't think he was expecting what happened :-)

The carrera pulled more lengths on the 599 than the SLR, but they both beat it

and here is 599 against a stock 997tt. The difference is about the same as to the slr from the 599. So it seems that the slr would beat the 997tt by a wide margin in stock form.
