Need shipping "options" and advice...
One of the members here has offered up a set of electric seats to me at a reasonable price. He's in Illinois and I'm in Va., about 15 hours appart. Two questions:
Anyone recommend a reasonable shipper for a pallet consisting of 2 seats @ about 140# total weight?
Anyone ever dismantel the backs from the electric seats and how hard is it to do? I'm thinking removing the backs and boxing them up individually would be more convenient to get thru FEDEX or UPS...
Ideas and thoughts guys...

Mike,
I did exactly this with my old car. I put sport seats in and sent the full power seats cross country on a pallet. I left the backs on and strapped both seats down to the pallet, then padded and shrink wrapped them. I used Yellow freight if I recall correctly, and the price was reasonable. The one issue is that with freight companies is that they typcially need to pickup from and deliver to a commercial address where the means to load/unload the pallet is available. If delivering to a residential address the price usually goes up a lot.

Better yet, arrange to drop off and pick up at their shipping terminal. This will save A LOT. (This eliminates the local truck with a lift gate to go out and collect it, and the local truck to drop it off....) You just need to run down to 'that part' of town...
Make sure you compare rates- some shippers are more 'individual friendly' than others... rates without discounts are crazy, most companies get discounts in excess of +60% off 'list'. Also, the class of parts will influence shipping rate, not just weight.

Mike,
I shipped my seats up to seattle a while ago. I boxed them up with the backs tilted in a box with hard core wood around it. I shipped via Fedex and got threre safe and sound. You can look up fedex.com and calculate based on weight, dimension, zip code, it will give you an estimate price. For package and shipping you are looking around $250. Too bad you are not in Cali, I have a neighbor that does the packing, charge me very little amount. Best of luck.

Try BAXGLOBAL... I've sent/received seats with them and for big shipments that's what you have to do...

Mike, I have seen others on here shipping seats in U-Haul wardrobe boxes, which are just the right size for whole seats, with UPS or FedEx. The seats are not that heavy. If you've already researched this option, nevermind.
if you use FedEx just make sure you insure them and that they are packed well...they have a habit of loosing GT3 seats in Recaro marked boxes...this is how one (ordered two) of my seats arrived by FedEx...fortunately the seat wasn't damaged but the harness set was stolen...
Figured I'd update this thread incase someone else needs to ship something heavy/large...
I ended up going onto www.freightcenter.com and getting a decent rate for a crated 250# package (Two electric OEM 996TT seats) to be shipped from Quincy Il. to Virginia for $171
I'd like to thank Adam Bowles for working with me on buying his seats, and for building a crate to ship them to me in, and working with the shipper to make this happen!
Much appreciated!

Happy to help, Mike!! That is a great price, too. I payed a LOT more than that when I had my sport seats shipped to me from CA, although part of what I paid was for packaging.
Hope you enjoy the seats!!
