I would never suggest removing either bumper support permanently. I speak from experience. If my rear bumper support was not in place during my rear end collision, I would have needed an engine replacement for sure. Not to mention the safety factor for the occupants. My 2 cents.

I am planning to leave the front one in place from a safety perspective and just take the rear off, I guess If I need a new engine my insurance as the car is seriously damaged my insurance will pay for that. And should I experience a rear impact the engine etc should protect somewhat

To remove the rear crash bar and it's collapsable shock tubes would probably be less than an hour. You will then have no place to attach the 2 bumperettes and will have 2 holes in your bumper that need to be addressed. In addition to what BlackHorseTurbo said about vulnerability, you will lose the tow hook attachment hole. Total weight saving including heat shield is 19 lbs.

The front would probably take a similar amount of time but again you will lose the tow hook attachment hole. The front assembly weighs slightly less but I didn't remove mine and thus don't have an exact weight.

If you take either of them off, the bolts thread into a permanently-attached nut on the bottom of the aluminum piece. Don't try to twist the nut off the bolt.

I would also guess that aircooled models didn't even have this rear bumper support and brackets, I intend to take off both the alu cross member and and the supporting brackets which I guess are steel and the heavy bit

Ok finally got round to taking my rear bumper off, took circa 20 minutes once I figured how, needed a the jack to get to the philips screws at the top bumper corner in the wheel arch.

"Remove rear bumper cover: 4 phillips on top, 2 phillips on bottom, 4* 25 torx on bottom, 2* 20 torx in the wheel well + 2 phillips in the wheel well near top each top corner . Unplug the wires.(easy) " Bumper is very light in weight and can be easily handled by one person.

This is what Marksi car looks like with it removed, I haven,t got there yet but will tomorrow, I will leave the two impact rear units on just as he has though.

My front bumper support will remain on the car too.

Probably going to remove these on our car and make something a bit more lightweight to take their place. Best of both worlds IMO for a car that will see street use from time to time.

Richard you may as well remove the bumper support mounts. They both probably weigh 7 pounds and are pointless at this point.

Good luck!!

What did you have in mind Wes? Something made out of a lighter material or something else entirely? Thanks!

A few pounds is not worth injury or your life! Please reserved these kind of talk for teens that got more ***** then brain (peace!!!). I would removed the carpeting in the car before I removed the bumpers! 19 lbs? Make sure washer fluid is empty and add 3 gallons less fuel every time you go to the pump. Problem solved!

Can you remove the rear bumperetts and leave the bumper support? Obviously there would be 2 holes there for the engine to breath better, lol.

Understood, but some of us look at this from a weight distribution perspective. Removing weight from the rearmost part of the car is important when you want to improve weight distribution, so there are some good ideas floating around here. Removing weight from the front of the car is not as acceptable towards that goal. I definitely hear you about safety though, and agree that everyone should keep that in mind.

I don't believe so, since I'm 99% sure that the bumperettes are connected to the rear bumper.
