Cleaning the intake manifold

Hey guys-

I just stopped by the dealer today and they were telling me about how my 996tt needs to have the intake manifold cleaned. It was quite expensive and was wondering if it is necessary and if I could possibly do it myself. All input would be greatly appreciated. Thanks!

p.s. Did the give you any reasoning behind it? "Snake oil " product?

No, they just said that it is time to get it cleaned (most likely due to mileage I suppose?)

I guess with the economy and car sales falling off...the service departments are doing all they can to make up the losses. Looks like they're getting desperate. I'd ask them how they determine when that particular service is required....and where in the service manual it recommends this process. I know guys clean the throttle body with CRC on a rag when it gets gummed up and will sometimes affect the idle.

The alum of the intake is cooler than the surrounding area, the metal may collect oil, then dust in the oil, causing it to cake along the runners, possibly clogging the injectors and/or effecting the way the throttle body " butterfly " actuates.

It happens, but not often ( I cannot think of a modern car in the past year that I have seen the need ) and certainly not " just because"

if you decide to do it, ask them to check your muffler bearings too, especially if you have stock mufflers...see what they say

Too clean your intake is dumb beyond belief.

Could they have been referring to cleaning your intakes to your intercoolers?

I have seen everything from leaves, to paper and cans come out of these.
