The time has come to add oil to my 2002 996 TT... I bought Mobil One synthetic 5w30...For gasoline engines... Is that correct, or do I need to get one that says turbo diesel on the bottle??? I know, dumb question, but I definitely don't want to ruin the engine! Thanks, flame suit on

Ok there is a bunch of threads on it. I personally run Mobile One 0W-40 European blend. I know different tuners suggest different blends. I'd suggest searching for the oil threads. That should shine some light onto the subject. I think people like Kevin from UMW, Todd from Protomotive all have suggestions for it.

Turbo diesel is for sure not right. As for the weight and viscosity, Check the manual

What do you mean by add oil? Is your car burning oil? Or did you mean change the oil?

Either way, if the car is stock, I would go with Porsche reco'd oil.

You should never, ever mix oils- not brands, not viscosities... When you add, use the same oil- if you drain and refill you can change.

The stabilizer packages and chemistry in the oil is important- and these can vary between brands and grades, and might not be fully compatible...

Um,

the 5w-40 turbo diesel mobil 1 is a recommended weight from Porsche, and is super oil. Not sure where you guys are coming from. An oil engineer praised it and 0w-40 as the finest of oils you could get (not an exxon employee) on the UMW site and on rennlist.

Yes, there are a lot of oils. Follow the porsche manual if you are worried ...get the list via search (I just added it for you) and I am pretty sure renntech.org. Pay to join that site. Well worth it. Oil discussions bring out religious fervor here. The true answer is many oils are fine. Porsche's engineers use 0w-40 in their race cars in alms (gt3 rsr's and the lmp2 cars). Given what those engines cost and rev to....probably fine for us.

I am not an oil dealer. I don't get sponsorship money. If you change your oil appropriately (say every 5 to 7.5k miles, some I hear in Europe go 20k kms...), it should be fine.

Mobil 1 is in the car. Every time I've wanted the car to spin, that oil has made things just fine by me. Nuff said. The zinc question...more "stuff" is what you want, but it is thought to kill catalytic converters.....but the "diesel" version has the most zinc in it (hence why some may think it best)....just because the thing says diesel doesn't mean it is not gas engine ok. I ran it last summer. No issues. I really liked it a lot. I put 0w-40 in for the winter.

Note, temperature is a factor.
T2 has over 200k miles on his car. 0w-40 M1 every 5k miles religiously. No issues. Given that and the use by Porsche in their own race cars, I probably will stick with 0w-40 in the future.

Based on what I have been told by Kevin at UMW, I now let my car cool off for 2 minutes (idle) before turning it off no matter what....the oil is the heat sink of the turbos....

:-)
