Rep Power Trashing....
Rep Power Trashing....
I noticed today after a post, that my Rep Power had gone WAAAYYYY South.
It had to do with a comment I had about oil in the turbo piping, and my comment was mine was dry, and the intent was that excessive oil is not good.
Anonymously, as the system works, rep power went up that this comment is nonsense. I edited my post to remove the comment that excessive oil is bad, and even what the conditon of mine were on inspection. Is there no recourse to right a comment that may have been wrongly interpreted?
I meant no malice whatsoever and was only trying to offer advice. I am not a newbie and have worked as a Superbike Mechanic in the early/mid 80's and have a very stong mechanical background, but I enjoy the comradarie of other enthusiaasts and always look for advice and knowledge from others that have marched before me. I am no means an expert, but try to fix anything (except major bodywork) myself.
I now realize that this rep power can be interpreted as a measure of someone's integrity and I'd like the chance for an appeal.
Thanks for listening.

rep is dependent on the number of posts as well as what rep you get from other members...as you get your post count up your rep will be less sensitive to a single rep...just so you are prepared the usual response to a plea like this is not what you are looking for...also keep in mind that rep is as much a fun thing as an assessment of a members integrity...but in a good spirit I will get you off on the right foot with some mod rep...

I'll probably get flamed for this but that rep stuff is wack. It prevents folks from saying whats really on their mind and some pp take it to serioustly, and i find quiet commecal. I think it should only be used for transaction with other forum members, and sponsors. I think a lot of pp use it for the wrong reason/miss use it....imo

Hi.
I liked it more before the rep power thing was there....could we have a poll and go with what the poll ends up showing perhaps, or just dump it. The value of this site and forum is that people can be honest, and the sponsors actually benefit because when a product is good, we all talk about it and help each other around problems with installation, etc. Note the recent JIC threads...
Anyway, with all due respect, I vote to remove it. There are some guys with few posts that know tons with low rep and other guys with various posts off topic with lots of rep...seems silly. I want people here to help me with technical/driving things...and to them, thank you. I have tried to do the same.
I agree with divexxtreme 100%. Moderators, please dump it.

completely agree. I gave OP positive rep yesterday to make up for it. The rep points is totally abused. I got negative rep on 1/5 for no reason and it said HAPPY NEW YEAR. Then when I posted on that same thread why someone would give me neg rep for asking a simple question, I got another neg rep on 1/16 saying "waaaa". That second hit was massive as it took 3-4 of the visible points away from me. So it had to be someone who has been here a very long time and who has many points. Basically it's like children playing games.
Really at this point it is quite obvious that negative rep means nothing, so even if it does not go away, we all really know that it has nothing to do with anything, except that you have been here a long time or that you post often.

probably a default setting when the forum was upgraded recently. My guess anyway.
Here is where it came back:

I certainly do not consider "rep" when posting- I like to think that when you are a long time member, who has engaged in (generally) respectful discourse and have added to the 'conversation', that comments are taken 'on balance'. Unfortunately, the Rep system is sporadically used and can have a erratic result- not everyone recognizes how to use it, positive posts are rarely acknowledged, and a negative here or there from disgruntled members has a disproportionate effect.

PS So where ARE those 'rep parties'?
PPS Sorry about that K40 post....NOT.

Oh c'mon guys....if you start worrying about rep power ratings, you'll end up being so paranoid about getting a bad rating that you won't just say what's on your mind. This forum is about helping folks out and telling it like it is....not necessarily being rude or mean-spirited about it, but never the less, if someone is putting out wrong, inaccurate, or vindictive responses....you need to be able to voice your opinion and not worry about a red mark. The folks who have been on here for any length of time know who the knowledgeable folks are...and who is a PIA or full of B.S. I get a kick out of the tell-it-like-it-is folks who aren't afraid to voice an opinion. Those are the posts I value. We don't need to protect the rep ratings like a credit rating...you can never keep everyone happy. The rep rating system is based on a reaction to how someone perceives your post...doesn't mean they're right or you're wrong....it's simply a matter of individual (or in some cases...collective) perception.
