Suppose I bought a C6 Corvette
Suppose I bought a C6 Corvette
I stopped by my local Corvette dealer (yes Corvette not a Chevy dealer).
They had three C6 coupes. I have never owned or wanted to own an American car or a Corvette.
I did like the C5 a bit, but I must confess, I really like the C6.
The interior is a great improvement over the C5. It has really neat gadgets like keyless entry and start, heads up display, nice gauges a great shifter and a lot of trunk space.
I love the look and the build quality looked pretty good.
I am seriously considering adding one to the collection. I think it is a great value and a damn nice car.
I would get the Z51 package which has nice touches, like larger brakes with cross drilled rotors, stiffer suspension, enhanced oil cooling for engine, power steering and transmission, different transmission gearing for better acceleration.
A loaded model with Z51, fully loaded options and DVD nav is like $53,000.
What do you think?

Definately, but I would try to wait for the Z06 version. The rumors coming out of Chevy are suggesting an amazing car (that can trounce the 996tt all day long). Latest I hear is 2,900lbs, 550bhp, 500 lb ft. Not sure on price though.
Even if you just purchased the C6, I would go for it. The corvette is a great car for the money and gives you a completely different driving experience from anything else. Please keep us updated with what you decide.

The skunk works "Blue Devil" version of the C6 ( strategically named after Duke basketball alum and GM CEO Rick Waggoner in hopes of getting his approval ) is rumored to have 600-625 hp and lots of wild carbon fiber bodywork for a 2800 lb target weight., a $100K price and very limited number built in the 2007 or 2008 model year. Still alot of internal debate whether it should be built, even though they have been developing it for awhile . They worry it would take the luster off the next Z06 , a high profit car . Corvette is a relatively high volume sports car ( 35,000 built per year and 25-30% are expected to be Z06 )not a limited build corporate toy like Viper or Ford GT. It would be long time Corvette chief engineer ( only the third one in 51 years ) Dave Hill's swan song.
(Power to weight ratio on the Devil would be like current 996 Turbo with 800 hp !

I had a C5 vette and it was a great car. While the C5 is much stiffer than other corvette generations, it still became a rattle trap around 36000 miles. The body gap tolerances were good, but not great. The leather was horribly cheap, but typical for GM quality.
The C6 should be even better than the C5 in nearly every respect, but I have yet to see one in person. I hear that the C6 still uses leaf springs though, which is a big drawback to me.
C5 resale was really strong for the first 2 years of but then when the market was flooded, prices dropped alot. When the C5 first came out, dealers got up to $5K over sticker. By last year, they were giving $5K off sticker!
Knowing this, I would absolutely not pay over sticker on the C6.

Yes I know that but my point (which may have been lost) is that this particular dealer only sells Corvettes.

C6 seems like a nice improvement ... however I'd personally choose a used 993 C4s or turbo for about the same money.
