the time has come to replace my OEM battery


what are my options
i have a lwfw (if that makes a difference for cranking power)

its a daily driver, but i havent been driving it much lately... so i would need a battery that doesnt die if not being used for a few days

what are my options ?

 

Do you want a LW battery? If not I suggest the Interstate MTP-93. Direct replacement....also get the Interstate maintainer at the same time...connects to the terminals and has a plug that will attach to the outlet. Has more CCA than the OEM battery.

 

I got a Die Hard battery( Type E2) from Sears for $135 and it's 20 LBS lighter, it fits in the OEM tray with the OEM bracket. It has a 3 years warranty and it's been great, no problem.

 

Bosch battery from Pepboys. Direct fit. No problems.

I still think any of these batteries will drain after a while. Get a battery tender installed.

 

what about the optima orange top also very light and durable. I have one on another porsche and it has been great for many years and easily weighs 15-25 lbs less.

 

how heavy is the oem battery ?

 

I like the optima also...sealed no water to add or spill (I had a 914 so I know what a leaking battery can do). But needs a tray mod to fit. Search this site for "optima" for size selection and solutions for mounting. Below is the optima site:

If I recall correctly, OEM batt is 52#.

Optima has the Red Top 34 series with 800CCA and 1000 CA. The optima weighs 38lbs.

 

I tend to agree with Roller...no matter what battery you put in these cars, it seems that without some sort of float charger, they all seem to discharge rather quickly. Some folks are just lucky I guess, but most guys can't leave their cars without a charger on it for more than a week or two without having to charge it back up. The electrical draw on these cars is frustrating. I've gone thru all the suggestions looking for a drain. I've replaced the alternator, bought two batteries, chased down wiring, relays, fuses, connections....still has a draw somewhere. So a new battery is not always the solution.

Edit** I'm referring to the 87 930, not the the 996TT. The TT stays charged for weeks on end...but eventually needs a charge...but doesn't discharge as fast as the 930.

I killed the battery in mine last month, but I left the radar detector on for 2 weeks, no driving. I have had mine down nearly a month and it did not crank, but it took a jump start easily. I have had it down for 2 weeks at a time with no loss at all. So maybe it varies from car to car.
