Buying a 996TT | Suggestions needed from 6speeders
I am very close to narrowing down 3 996TT's that I really like. I am new to P Cars and have spent a great amount of time reading the boards, as well as consulting with some local techs about the car. Most have said its as reliable as a civic (with just a tad more power
) and is the best of the best for the P Car family in its time.
I am glad to hear their great reviews, but, i want to know what problems it has? What should I look for when buying one in terms of damage? Things to stay away from etc?
[I have searched, don't flame]
I had one specific question though, how long do your clutches usually last and can they handle a basic mods like a flash/exhaust/exhaust manifolds (possibly upgraded 18g's)

MAF sensors tend to blow & transmission 2nd gear popout issue. Try to find out if the trans has been repaired under previous ownership. Other than those 2 items; damn reliable. I tend to steer away from 01's beacuse of the lack of glove box. Clutch will hold up well unless driven hard after flash/exhaust or more. As with any vehicle check the title, check for paint/body work, and try to get maint. records.
2nd gear pop-out issues. See if it is in the repair records. If not, somewhere on this forum I read something pertaining to how to drive and test for it. I don't remember where I read it and it was over a year ago. If it has that problem it will be expensive to fix. Have a dealer put PIWIS computer on it and check for the range 2 over-revs. This can indicate abuse.
All the mods you speak of may strain a stock clutch setup. I did a lot of mods early on and changed clutch during those procedures so I can't provide first-hand knowledge. Others on the forum can probably be more definitive than I concerning the clutch.
Welcome to the World of Porsche.

Thank you everyone. If anyone can find me links, that would be fantastic in regards to what a proper procedure is on taking a look at the vehicle. I am going through a broker and do not mind spending the time and money to check vehicles to make sure the car is the best.

2 years ago I bought a 2001 Turbo from Chicago Motor Cars in Carol Stream. It had 42,000 miles on it. The price was great. I had a great experience with both Anthony and Parin. It had a complete service history. Runs and drives like it has 4,200 miles on it. Mine has the original clutch. IMO clutch is all about whether it was used correctly.

I had the car shipped to Napleton Porshce and had them do an inspection that cost about $400. The inspection included reading a bunch of info from the 'black box' that will tell you just about everything, including how many overreves and minutes the car has run at different RPM ranges. I planned on buying an extended warranty anyway and Napleton requires the inspection. If they will not warranty the car I wouldn’t buy it.

Make sure it has had it services. 15k, 30k, 45k, 60k (and/or once a year)
The car is my daily driver – even in winter. It is as reliable as a wood burning stove. I would suggest you get a warranty. I paid $3000 for an Easy Car Gold warranty that covers almost EVERYTHING. 3 yr 30,000 mile.
After I had the car for about 6 months my airbag light went on. It was a seat belt sensor. My driver seat was also a little lose – They had to remove the seat, fix the sensor, do a bunch a stuff with the air bag, fix the wobble in my seat. The bill was almost $5,000. Covered. I would have to say this is not common. Nail in tire – covered - $500 for each rear tire. There were several other things (vacuum leak, other).
Mechanically, nothing really goes wrong. About a month ago, I had a misfire under heavy boost. CEL came on, then went away. Took it to the dealer. They suspected the spark plugs. To change the plugs requires removing the rear bumper etc. Dealer charged me 1,200 – not covered. When it is not covered, its expensive. Also, I think the 30k and 60k services are like 2,000. If I would have known it was the plugs I would have taken it to Midwest Eurosport. They are much cheaper than the dealer. They also have a shop at the Autobahn Country Club if you ever plan on tracking your car. And, personally, you will have no idea or how truly spectacular the car is until you get it on the track. Napleton hosts some events at Autobahn.

IMO Porsche is the only way to go. Best all around daily driver that you can pound the $hit out of and it always only seems to run BETTER. Truly amazing out on a track. Braking is just as impressive as acceleration.
drivin like it should be.

Thank you very much. I appreciate your input in this matter and now feel more confident going through the inspection process. I have great connections here locally with a few Porsche Indie shops, so it should not be a large issue to have service properly done. Upon receiving the car, it will be chipped, with an exhaust put on. I want to make sure the clutch is in full operation and should last. Based upon the fact it is a Sachs clutch, I am not worried at all about its longevity.
If anyone else has anything in terms of things to look for, please let me know. I would be really excited to see a few more of your experiences.

With a $5k airbag light fix and a $1.2k plug change, you're being taken advantage of - big time.

Hey fdorn,
Cascade mentioned he is in the Chicago area, so am I. I am also lurking and looking for the right 996TT.
You mentioned you drive your car thru the winter here in Chi town.
How was that? Do you have issues with clearance? How do you deal with the salt? etc etc etc.
Thanks,
dhc

From my experience, aftermarket warranty companies are something to avoid. Auto/home/whatever. Obvious, but their business mission is to take your money and not pay out. But that's not why I replied.

I probably just got lucky with the warrenty, but I think they have fixed about $8K worth of stuff (at dealer cost to me) so far and I have 12 months to go.
