Engine question????

does anyone know what differences, specifically, would be found in comparing a stock 01 turbo 996 engine to a stock 04 turbo 996 engine??
thanks

chad..

could u be more specific....when u say the case is the ONLY change mechanically the outer case of the entire engine? bottom? lower? other than the case which my limited knowledge means to me the outer part that just surrounds the engine? if that is the only change what has changed about the case and how does that make the engine "better" if at all?

The case is reinforced. It is stronger. It will take more power. If you look at the two cases side by side you will notice the "ribs" on the sides.

If you go to Rennlist, 996tt forum, the thread by Kevin entitled The Quest for Maximum HP, page 6, you will find pics of both cases.

I disagree here. I know of three failures with the new case right now. Brand new cars that had to have new cases from leaking. The molds and castings are worse than the original. Lots of profiling, no finish work. They cut some real corners here. Stick with the older style. This type of crap is not common with the older case. The desgin has been around for too many years.

Stephen,

Thanks, that is good information to have. I would expect anything that is new as in "out for the first time part" to have some bugs to work out. I am sure they have been working out these bugs.

My point is the case was changed and it is stronger. At what power range this would be an issue ....... I don't know. I don't know of any failures of the old case to about 900 hp as of yet.

So you feel the 964 case is superior to the new Spanish 996 case???

I know that they changed the spark plugs in MY2004. The prev. generation plugs will foul out after a short time when you start modding the car, and will cause you to lose power.

Its funny when you pay this much for a car, it comes with ****ty plastic bypass valves that inevitably fail and spark plugs that foul.

Hell, the casting on the old case has gone to heck. The runners on the spigots look the same. I thought I had crap in the case until I tried to wipe it. The casting in general I suspect is the same as on the Spain case. The older case will put up with abuse. Pin it and you will not have to worry. No one knows yet about the new stuff. We will have to wait for Kevin to get his running. Like anything, Porsche will correct the issues. It will take a few to get with the program. You can bet if we know, Porsche has known far longer than us.

Oh, and Spain, hell....My heads were made in France!

I have purchased a new Spanish case. The casting finish is poor. If you were to drag a cloth rag over the case it would get caught in all of the burrs. One could fix all the flaws with a die grinder and cleanup all of the flaws. It seems like every new casting that Porsche has, they do develop some teething issues. There is noticeable web stiffening, in the lower section of the case. And it is lighter... You folks can see it here.. http://forums.rennlist.com/rennforum...4&page=6&pp=15
Well Kevin, aren't you going to boat tail it.

They changed the plugs on the turbo's way before 2004.

The new spark plugs were introduced into production on Aug. 14, 2001. The heat range was increased from 5 to 6. (TSB 2870) I'm trying to get the dealer to replace mine under warranty. I don't think thet are going to though.

That's cool but it's still too bad your car won't be there I'd love to see it run and kick some booty...
