buying a high mileage 996tt 2nd car?
buying a high mileage 996tt 2nd car?
Hello ive ALWAYS wanted a 996tt, and finally with the market these days i can actually own one of there great cars outright, BUT the two local cars im looking at are both pretty high mileage.
One is seal gray, 2003 AUTO with 65k on the clock
the other is a 2001 black 6spd with 59k on the clock, but actually 3.5k more than the 03.. this is price listed still will be able to work them down a little im sure..
I plan on driving her weekends and sunny days here in Florida. I would plan on putting less than 7k a year on it.
So down to my main question, I would love to own this car for at least 3-4 years and therefore i would have around 80+k miles, I plan on getting a aftermarket warranty asap, ive searched around and found only 1 thread about high mileage 996tt. There was one that is still running at 200,000 miles! but i wanted the forums opinion before pulling the trigger.
The other choice is to wait another year or so and save for a lower mileage.
Thanks for the help, Travis

Mine has 50K miles on it. From what i have seen, there is not a significant price difference between the ones that have around 40K miles vs those that have 60K and over. Absent that, if the car was well maintained, the 996 TT is pretty much rock solid. Here are the 'money' items you should watch out for (if they haven't recently been done:
60K Service (inc spark plugs)- This will be close to $2K at a dealer
Pads and Rotors - This would be close to $2k as well.
Clutch - Dont recall how much but more than $2K for sure
Tires - $1,500 - 2,000.
good luck

The 996 TT is bullet proof for the most part. A good PPI is recommended by most so that you have a good baseline to build from. High miles should not scare you on these cars as long as you have the base knowledge of it's prior life. After the inspections, you may chose an older car versus newer. GL
hell... 60k miles?!?!!? thats NOT high mileage - my car has higher mileage and has been headache free! Just make sure to maintain the car properly. These cars are among the best built cars on the planet and DESIGNED to drive everyday (unlike a ferrari or lambo in my opinion). I would have no hesitation buying one with this mileage or even higher.
I have said before - bulletproof is a relative term. You are NOT buying a honda, so don't expect 100k plus in mileage without significant rebuild expenses. It MAY happen, but if the car was driven as it is designed to be (borderline supercar), 100k plus is simply unrealistic. It all depends on your expected usage. If you are going to use it as a 4-5k per year sunday driver, maybe.., but if you are going to put 10-20 k per year on it, go for the lower mileage version. You will still have the age issues though (some things wear out over time, not necessarily mileage, such as rubber items), so YMMV.
Thanks for the comments guys, im gonna pull the trigger!(it has clean carfax and all service records, always been a FL car) you will not believe me if i told you how much im getting the 2003 seal gray for... lets say well under 40k..
