is this care salesman telling the truth

i am negotiating on a really nice tt, i am thinking of driving it home to save shipping fees and just for the fun of it, he just told me the following:

Is shipping involved? This is a
tax concern, shipped I collect no tax, driven back, have to collect it.

is this correct ? i've never bought out of state before

edit: car is located in michigan, i am in boston

That makes no sense. You pay tax where you are going to title the car.

Actually it is dependent on the state. For example I know if you buy a car in CA and intend to drive it off the lot it must be registered and taxes paid. You could ship it to the state line without this registration/tax. So check the MI laws.

At least in KY, if you pay taxes at the car lot, they will give you a credit for KY taxes (I think). I drove off the lot in TX and paid no taxes until I registered in KY...

My understanding is that you pay the taxes where you live. When I purchased my TT in Florida, I registered the car in Ohio and paid the sales tax in Ohio. I have heard of having to pay the tax in the state where you acquire the car, but then you get credited for that tax in the state where the vehicle is registered. Call the Michigan Secretary of State or go online.

I bought a 930 Turbo in Michigan a long time ago. I flew out from CT to Detroit, bought the car, they gave me a 10 or 15 day temp tag, so I could drive it home. Reg'd it here in CT and paid sales tax at that time.

I am Canadian and bough a car in Florida. I was not able to get any kind of license plate (transit) if I don't pay the taxes. I was told it is the same thing for other state like Connecticut and California but not the case for New-York.... So shipping was the only option for me. $1100.00 instead of $7000.00 ;-(

Do you have to mess with this if you buy private party? I always thought I could just drive it home in a day then register it back home and pay taxes at that point.

Tell him your twin will do the car transport..., he'll never know it's you

I bought a new car in detroit michigan and yes if you drive it away from a dealers lot you have to pay sales tax. If its delivered in another state you save the michigan tax.

I gave the dealer this option:

gives me a temp cardboard tag

the salesman drives both of us in the new car 51 miles to Toldeo, OH followed by a dealership car. the car is delivered in Ohio and gets around the sales tax law.
