Cayenne Turbo and 996TT questions

I have some questions regarding both of the vehilces, maybe someone can answer.....I have a 2004 Cayenne Turbo and a 2002 996 TT....bought both vehicles from the same Porsche dealer and both were preowned......each have a problem that I have had into the dealer a few times with no satisfaction.....
The Cayenne Turbo has the feeling of almost a missfire in the engine as you are accelerating feels almost like a plug wire that is bad, so if you go easy from 50 or 60 mph up, it feels almost like a miss.......not turbo lag, but a miss.....anyone else experience that?
The 2002 996 TT has a chain rattle sound when it is idling and they are telling me it is "normal".......it sounds aweful, not like you would think a 100k+ car should sound......I had a 2002 996 TT prior to this one about a year ago and it did not sound like this, they will not do anything about either vehicle, saying they can not feel it in the Cayenne and that the 996 TT sound is normal, what do you guys think, any experiences like this?
Thanks for any and all responses...

The problem is that I love the car, its just carzy to me that we have to put up with such an noise from a 100k+ car, think about what it will sound like by the time it gets 50000 miles or more on it...

Your 996 is fine. Mine makes the same sound.

My Cayenne does not have any symptoms like you describe.

It's normal for chain-driven engines.

Do you hear that "rattle sound" inside the car or when you stand outside (behind) it? Although it's normal on the outside, you definitely shouldn't hear it inside.

I hear it outside...it sounds TERRIBLE, I have had guys make fun sitting at a redlight, saying things like....put some oil in it, it is not a sound to me that a 100k+ car should have....if it is normal, then Porsche should correct it.......it does not sound right to me in any way.....like I said the other 2002 996tt that I had did not do it at all............

I had the dealer check the chain rattle, and they said my license plate was missing 2 screws in the bottom and replaced tehm. To my surprise it still rattles!

Well, on mine, you only hear it when you know that it is there... i.e. it is almost unhearable. There is a thing in a TT's engine called "Kettenspanner" (German term for it). I guess the proper translation to English is either "chain adjuster" or "chain tightener". Did you have that checked? Maybe the drive chain is not tight enough on your TT?

They did check that and tightened the chain, it still did not make a difference, they are having the Porsche rep there on this Thursday, and I am going to have him listen and also drive the Cayenne, and see what he says.......maybe I can get some sense out of him..........I know the service reps are very rude and short on all of their answers....treat you like you bought a 2000.00 car and leave me alone attitude........not what I would expect from a company that sells the 100k plus vehicles.....?????

my car dose the same rattle. I hate it, and agree that it sounds horrible and can be embarassing while at a stop. I was told by a dealer that it was normal. Check out the archives in regards to this subject as it has been brought up before.

the rattle comes from the timing chain. A subtle rattle is unavoidable in these engines, as has already been stated. There will be some minor variability from car to car within the same year and between years. It should not, however, be as loud as you are implying. If there is a significant difference between what you have experienced in the past, if it is getting louder, or is louder than other 996TT then this is an issue that will require attention. The license plate story is laughable, but not uncommon. Most people will look for anything that CAN cause noise (like the muffler cover) but the key is what you have said. It sounds like a chain rattling. That is likely the sound of the engine timing chain hitting the metal cover.

It sounds like a chain rattling because that is exactly what it is. But it gets loud only if the chain is loose. If the tension is proper, my suggestion is the mechanic check the sprocket that is part of the drive shaft -- if the sprocket is loose or wobbly, the chain will hit the housing. It is not recommended to be fixed, but rather the engine be replaced. Three years ago I had an acute interest in this particular problem. It is an expensive correction (for Porsche) if in fact it is what I suspect. But it is a rare problem as I understand it. Let us know what happens. BTW, there aren't too many dealerships that are authorized to completely cut into a "warranty" engine like I described.

As for the "holy moley" pepper, I'm sorry I cannot help.
