i'd think that the oem thicker wheel could be wrapped in factory leather...

Find a top notch upholstery shop in your area (ask a few dealers - like Mercedes, Lexus, Porsche, BMW). Ask the folks there about their work with steering wheels. They can find the matching leather or dye some to match. Just use your existing wheel and wrap it one more time. Piece of cake.

If you want to spend the money, I think the Ruf wheel looks great and is thicker than the oem piece.

The Porsche factory stock wheel is 362mm diameter
The TA Wheel comes in three sizes:
A recover of the stock wheel with a thicker wrap (Jack LA has one)
A 340mm diameter version
A 320mm diameter version

I have the 320mm version which is quite small and not DOT approved for the states.

Although there are many sources, you could try FVD and CEC.

I paid more than $1K but can't recall exactly.

Isn't there a "thicker steering wheel" option now available through Porsche? Maybe you can source the part from the parts department? If you don't mind a black steering wheel, there is always Carnewal:
