I Love My New '02 TT, but...
It's so freakin' low!
Literally JUST got it, came across the border last week from SoCal into Victoria BC. Finishing up the last few odds/ends for the provincial & fed inspections.
It's a fairly modded car; GMG Stage 2+2, 600 HP approx with a race-ready suspension that effectively lowers the car an additional 2 inches.
So I've had to put in an application to the city to re-grade my driveway accordingly so I don't scrub out every time I enter/exit. What a pain...
I just thought I'd share my frustrations with other turbo owners.
My friends would probably find it a bit hard to sympathize
Did any of you guys have to "mod" your driveway when you got your car?
Cheers

Yea, look how low that front is. Mine is a 4X4 compared to yours.
I have to do the same as Jags...
also had a Techart kit, suspension, etc. So to the OP, trust me, yours isn't that bad to deal with yet! lol

Glad to know I'm not alone in my plight :-)
Here's some details on the car:
2002 996 TT - Gunmetal Gray
It has the GMG Racing 2/2+ Upgrade, which (in their own words), is this:
GIAC Software: 3 programs, stock load level, 91 octane, and race 100 octane. Kit includes:
- KKK turbochargers, GT2 intercoolers, and Sport Exhaust System
with 200 or 100 cell catalyst
- Sport air filter and 2 sport diverter valves
- Exhaust is available in 3 sound versions (mild, loud, agressive)
Opional add-ons (Stage 2+): Sport Exhaust manifolds, larger throttle body and plenum
- Stock equivalent to X50
- Pump 91 - 610hp
- Race 100 octane - 640(Stg. 2)/650+(Stg. 2+)hp
I know a lot of you guys have cars pushing like 900 HP and stuff, but to me, 610 HP is more than enough.
I've driven a Ferrari F430 for a few days, along with various other "exotics" (Maserati's, other stock Porsches, etc.), and my Porsche would murder them all hands down.
I have never been in a car where its acceleration is literally scary and feels like a ride at Universal Studios. It's insanity.
Even makes my old M3 (which was a great all-round car that I already miss) feel like a Buick.
Here's a picture from the original ad on AT:

The gray in "real life" is actually a bit deeper and darker. The sun glare in the pic makes it look sort of silverish, which it is not.
I'll post more pictures ASAP. (As soon as the rain lets up for 5 minutes... it's been horrendous on the west coast the last few days)
Cheers

this might be the solution for many of you. Available from Griots

importing
I bought the car privately but had it shipped up by TFX International out of Ontario, who also provided customs brokerage. Even so, it was still loads of paperwork and hassle.
But worth it in terms of savings (and the fact that there's basically nothing on the market in Canada)
Good luck on your search for the perfect 996TT.
It seems like the classifieds section on this forum actually has some of the best selection and pricing of all the places I've seen.
Craigslist is also good, albeit harder to search on a nationwide basis.
It was a fluke that I found mine listed on AutoTrader. Sure wasn't priced like it...

On the note of importing a Porsche...
My advice to anyone else reading this and looking to bring up a car into Canada is to, if at all possible, go through a dealer. It may cost a bit more, but if you value your time it is well worth your while to have someone else do all the paperwork, etc.
But if you do get a car privately, do your best to look for vehicles where the seller has title in hand. (It took over a month for the Porsche's title to be released by the DMV...)
Also, I bought this car sight unseen, but not impulsively. I'd been looking the "perfect" car (for me) for months and doing a lot of research.
When this one popped up I had it PPI'd right away - which turned out very positively.
The main things I was anxious about was over-revving, compression, leaks and heat damage from the aftermarket turbos. I was also a bit apprehensive about how the driveline was handling an extra 200+ hp over stock.
As it turns out, the driveline (and the car in general) is in better shape than most stock turbos are at 30K miles, according to both that shop and my mine up here in Canada.
Anyway, once I'd sent down the $$ I worked out a deal with the Porsche service center to act as a kind of "escrow", where they stored the car on behalf of myself and the buyer.
Like anything, it was a calculated risk and I chose to take it.
I don't think I'd do it again as it was a little nerve-wracking, particularly as a private sale. (At least with a dealership you know "where they sleep", so to speak).
But that said, I couldn't be happier with my car and there is no way in hell I'd find a 996TT in this condition (and with the $20K+ in mods) for what I paid in Canada...
