ALot of guys will not install things they did not sell do to warranty issues if the part fails. I know I do the same thing, it's not worth the hassle IMO

Absolutely...although price is a big determining factor on which shop to use, service is just as important b/c I've been to shops to try save a few bucks and ended up costing more b/c of their inexperience or lack of care of the car.

Shops make a huge profit on parts they install. So do Dealerships. It's a bait and switch technique. Lure you in with a low hourly rate and once your car is apart, slam you with the parts.

Update: I went in to my shop tonight and discussed my concerns (the excess labor charge etc.) and the owners totally made everything OK. They listened to me, and gave me some free service to make up for the overcharge. I am completely satisfied.

We also discussed the parts issue. The main problem is Porsche is jacking up their parts so we agreed that they would be OK with me getting parts from places like Suncoast, I offered to pay a bit extra in labor but they declined stating they just wanted to make me happy and keep my business. Granted I do an easy $10K a year just in maintenance on my cars so it was a good move on their part but I am very pleased.

LOL, where is the low labor rate at any Porsche shop, dealer or otherwise?

I understand the idea that shops don't want to "warranty" parts supplied by the customer, or parts they do not endorse, but to not install them because they are missing out on excessive mark-ups is ridiculous.

I guess, if you are busy enough to be this way, good for you - and I hope for your sake your luck and success continues. But once things aren't so great for you, you may very well have to adjust your policy.

And by all means they can say the parts you bring them are junk if they have experience with it and reasons for it, but just based on the fact that they didn't supply the part (and inherent JACKED UP markup) is not a good one to deny the job or say "you have to buy this overpriced parts from me."

Just do your homework.

Exactly, the only reason people are often able to get things online for so much less is the value of buying in bulk. Online guys are just warehouses, who stock more than the average could imagine.

I work with bikes, and the online industry is hurting us. People come in complaining about our prices, then tell us what they paid for the item and it is less than our cost. Ridiculous.

Why do you consider someone getting the best product for the best price ridiculous? Its called being a smart consumer in a capitalist system. With that attitude (and it probably carries over to a sense of entitlement in you work) you would lose my business. I would recommend letting people get the best part price possible and keeping their business via quality work.
