How to tell an X50/X51?
How to tell an X50/X51?
First off, thank you in advance for all your help.
I am about to buy a 2004 TT X51, but I would like to verify that it is truly an X51. I have a ton of questions, so I am wearing out the search function, but I haven't found the answers I am looking for, like what does PPI stand for? Hopefully the deal goes through next week, and then it will be on to the mods. I gather I need to upgrade the exhaust to allow the turbo's to breathe better, a tune (is this a flash, a module, or a chip?) and little things like diverters, etc. I won't go overboard, being that repairs are very pricey, I want to use it as a daily driver (I have a 2nd vehicle already, so I am covered there) and I still want it to get decent mileage and pass smog. So any and all advice is greatly appreciated. I am a noob, but I have experience with forced induction/superchargers/engine mods. Thanks again.

BTW, does anyone know a good indy mechanic in the Thousand Oaks, Simi Valley or surrounding area?

Pre Purchase Inspection I believe ;-) There's a listing of option codes on a sticker at the rear trunk lid I believe? Someone else more knowledgeable can handle that one I think but there IS a sticker with the options somewhere on the car. Tunes are flashes through the ODB port. Diverters aren't required but are a good idea, be advised that space is tight in there but it's doable at home. Decent mileage... well my car seems to suck gas pretty good but a diesel TDI is my DD benchmark so I'm a little spoiled
I just enjoy the car, gas mileage be damned although it would be pretty helpful if the tank was bigger!

1. Regarding PPI- there is NO commonly accepted defintiion of what is in a PPI. YOU must specify what will be done. I recommend that the PPI simply be a full "CPO Inspection" as if they were checking the car to issue a CPO. I recommend this becuase dealers should know how to do this, and there is a commony accepted definition. You MUST add a "DME dump" looking for "over-revs" and error codes. (Shockingly this is not part of a CPO inspection). You may also decide you want a compression/leakdown test, THis latter is pricey- very- since it is essentially a spark plug change... (~$500 ish) If you DO wind up doing this, have them replace the plugs at parts cost only, and work out with the seller details on this as part of the terms. (ie if they cancel, they pay for the plug change)
2. X51 isn't anything... really... I don't see that as an option for 2004... the X54 means the exhaust tips are different.... an X50 is a different matter. Larger turbos, more efficient intercoolers and programming. The X54 cost $765, the X50 cost $17,000+
Take a deep breath, do some more research. PM me your email if you want a 2004 Porsche "Order Guide" with every option and every code....as mentioned above the underhood sticker has all the codes

The option codes are usually listed on a sticker in the front of the Maintenance Manual. I think there is a sticker on previous years non-turbos 996's (99-00) under the hood but it's not there on my 2001 996TT and there is not one on the rear trunk lid.
A helpful dealer should be able to decode the VIN# for you and get you the option list... I think.

There is no such option as an X51.
The options for the car will be stuck on the underside of the front truck
My car for example has
C23: Code for Australia
X54: Stainless steel exhaust tips
X70: Door entry guards in stainless steel
X71: Aluminium coloured instrument gauges
X97: Gear shift in aluminium
X98: Hand brake lever in aluminium
635: Rear park assist
639: Soft leather rear seats
982: Soft ruffled leather seats
650: Sunroof
09991: Manufacture from exclusive program
Go and join renntech.org
You'll be able to click on the documents section at the top and do a VIN decode and find all the options available for 996 TT and GT2's.
That should answer any questions you have.

On the sticker on the underside of the front hood, look for the engine code. An X-50 model should have M96/70E. If there is no E, then it's a standard turbo. This info comes from "The Essential Companion, Porsche 996" by Adrian Streather.
