Cold weather traction?

Well I ordered a performance box and it arrived Saturday (Thanks Neil). I took the car out Sunday night to test it out and see how it worked. Scared the crap out of myself. I live in NY and went out on I84 the night after the snow storm and while the road seemed pretty clear and dry, every time I tried a 60-130 pull, I spun the tires and things got pretty loose. Granted it was gusty windy and 20 degrees, but I have to say I was surprised how bad the traction was.

In general, can you get good pulls in cold weather if the roads are dry or is traction really compromised by the cold? I am running PS2's

We went out for a group drive here in Northern CA and the temperature wasn't nearly as cold as where you are and we all had traction issues (48 degrees).. Once thet tires warmed up things got better, but especially with PS2's I find that they REALLY need some time to get up to operating temperature.. I had ALL SORTS of issues before they were warmed up with front end grip..

Doing 60+mph on a night after the snow storm and 20 degrees definitely doesn't sound safe.

Be safe.

Cold weather = more power from turbos and less traction from tires. Why does God like to mess with us so much?

yeah ps2 cold are like wood , you will have no traction ... i have a very time gtting traction is 50+ degree weather . i took the car out right before we got hit with the snow hoping to do some dataloging and it was a lost cuase . so i said f-k it .

looks like with the weather we are getting and the temps, we are gonna have to wait till spring .... (sigh)

btw how much snow did you get up there ? we got just under 2 feet .

Thanks for the reassurance guys. I will patiently await some warmer weather to put down some good pulls.

As for the snow, surprisingly the further north you were in NY the less snow there was. Up around I84 there was only 3-6" whereas down near the city it was more like a foot.

In my X50 I can spin the tires on cold pavement in 1-3rd gear without even trying (I have PS2's). If I drive it now in the cold weather, I warm up the tires really good before I do any spirited driving. Could probably spin them in 4th if they were cold and I had the road to floor it at 4-5k RPM. But that's already well into triple digits and I have no desire to spin at that speed.

The only reason I don't have snows is I just bought a G550 and funds are a little short (never mind the blown oil cooler I just had to replace on the Turbo).

Dude, I live nearby, at 20 degrees those PS2s are rock solid with zero grip, you are very lucky, I bought a set a blizzaks this year and although they are made for the cold and the snow, I've had to noticeably be much more careful in turns, they are good on straights, wait until Spring or buy a set of winter tires (I recommend tirerack).
