How long do brakes last and what is best replacement?

I recently bought a '01 996TT with about 35k miles on it. The brakes are a little soft for my taste...i live in Houston and have to be constantly braking suddenly due to potholes everywhere. What are the best replacement brakes systems that don't require much maintenance?

Is there any cheaper options than replacing the entire brake system?

Thanks!

You might want to try a good brake bleed & pad change.Diff. manufactures offer varying compounds which give more initial bite.Street pads will do better for DD duty, but worse on the track & vice versa.I have used stockers, padgids & mintex. The stockers & mintex worked better around town for me w/ less noise.

If you will only be driving on the street, no need to upgrade your braking system. For a DD, new stock pads and fresh fluid is all you should need. Do you see any cracking in the rotors? If not, they should be fine as well. Now if you decide to track the car, that is a different story. The weight of the turbo really is better handled by the 6 piston GT3 front brakes with racing pads and an upgraded brake fluid like Castrol SRF. Good luck.

Ceramic brakes should last for a 100K+ miles for street use.
