Looking at a potential purchase and there is some confusion if the car has had the K16 turbo's replaced with K24's. Is there an easy way to tell from the outside that I could have the current owner verify?

I believe that k24's have blue ID tags, not positive.

 

The id tag on the turbos has the relevent numbers. Small tag -usually yellow or blue. It is riveted on-- quite small -prbably need a wipe to read.
Take no notice of the cast in numbers in the housing itself as the start with K24 in both K24 and K16 versions.

I think youre right, I may have it backwards. I just looked at a pair of k16/16g with blue tags... But Ive also seen K24/18g with blue tags

 

K24's have yellow AND blue tags-- I have both in my posession now.Stock standard from the factory with both colours.

 

1) Take car for test drive
2) Drive straight to drag strip
3) Do three runs and several highway pulls
4) Take to dyno for verification
5) Return to owner
6) Post results here
7) We'll let you know........But you would have had fun either way.

 

My K24s have yellow tags
I have asked about this before and it seems there is no answer (so far) as to why some tags are blue and some are yellow

If you check the small coloured tag which is riveted to the turbo housing you will see some part numbers on the tag which will help you to identify them

Note - you will have both the OEM and KKK part numbers on each turbo charger

 

Interesting, either way, just read the tag numbers if you can get to them, or post up some numbers.

 

Mine have blue tags and they were new in the box K24's prior to modification to 24/18G. They were not from the Porsche factory, but from BW.

 

I got all excited when the thought was a blue tag = K24s. The numbers on my blue tag are 99612301475

From the other numbers posted I am assuming a k16 turbo with a blue tag.

 

Todd, you have K16s

 

No wonder we have some sluggish K24 cars around here.

 

So is there a way to tell hybrid k16/24's apart from k16's without taking the turbos off the car?
