Durametric Engine Information - Type II Ignitions

Type II Ignitions - (I assume that's type II over revs e.g. shifting 2nd from 3rd instead of hitting 4th ... at redline in 3rd; correct?)

What are common numbers people see when they look at theirs? Please include hours.

Might as well ask the same for type I's ... would be interesting as well.

type II's can be created by standard overreving, some have noticed them under normal situations especially lightweight flywheel cars that are able to rev faster then the motor can slow it down and it will register how ever many ignition take place above the range before the rpms come back down under the redline rev limit.

type II's can also be created from a car getting a flash with new rev limit.

"Hours" refers to the time that the engine has run since new. It tells you when the over-revs occurred, but it would be irrelevant to any other car. You can compare that number to the current to tell whether it was you or the PO (or maybe the valet parking!)

I think the overrevs can be misleading, get a leakdown

test as part of the PPI. If everything checks out, I wouldn't let the overrevs be the deal breaker, maybe it could be used as leverage to lower the price a couple grand.

If a car was chipped, with the rev limiter increased, you can log stage 2's ...

Just spoke to the dealer, where i'm inquiring about a 996 TT and here's there info:

Type 1: 27,409 since last ignition
Type 2: 2,825 since last ignition
Total Hours: 984.8

What are your thoughts people, this car has 25k miles on it?

There should be a time for both the type 1 and 2 that will tell you how many hours since the last overrev occurred.... personally those numbers worry me, but mine had 0 type 2 and a hundred or so type 1s.

The key is trying to find out how long ago those occurred. If they were 200 hrs ago, less concern (200x50=10k miles ago, give or take)

If they were 4 hrs ago, someone is joyriding.

Either way I am thinking a leakdown/compression maybe?

Is the car chipped ? My guess is YES, with extended

rev limit to 7200.

These numbers are not so good...
Just after number of ignitions for range 1 and 2 you will see an hour number...It should be less than engine operating hours...
However engine hours copperspond to 25kmiles...

Is the car stock or chipped? If chipped, it may not be anything to worry about as a type 2 can occur just by bringing it up to the 'new' redline. So, find out from the dealer (if they even know) if the car is chipped, then find out the hours at which the last overrev occurred. Most likely it will be recent (test drive), but if it was many hours ago, the car should be fine.

I wouldn't pass on a car on this alone, there are so many variables that overrev's seem pretty unimportant nowadays.

Can someone help me understand why these "Over revs" are actually significant from a Car's health perspective. If an Over rev is every time the driver hits the end stop (Rev Limit), aren't they meaningless? What I Mean here is the rev limiter is there to prevent damage to the engine, ergo if you hit it, and it does it's job there is no damage or worry.

These engines are designed to rev a lot higher than the 6750 limits, so we are no where near any damage zones.

Am I missing something?

Thanks

SWR
