Safety Mods
Safety Mods
There have been a few good threads lately about some safety mods. I'm wanting to know what safety mods you all have put on your cars. Roll bars, fire extuinguisher, 5 point harness... Put pics up if you have them please.
I have a DD I that I don't think I'll be tracking and it will be a while before I do. I just think some are worth the price and effort, as well as they look pretty cool.
I'd even like to know about mechanical safety mods that you all have done like 966TT_STEVO's thread about the Pentosin tank.

whatever you do don't put in a 5/6 point harness with stock seats or harness/racing seats and no roll protection...either would be much more dangerous than the stock seats/belts...the stock setup is designed to work together...proper racing seats with harness eyelets, 5/6 point harnesses and a roll bar are designed to work together...if you are not going to track your car it makes no sense since getting in and out is more difficult and you lose access to the rear seat if you have one....if you are doing it just to look cool you will probably not do the entire install (like skipping the roll bar) which could cause a fatality in a roll over if you have racing seats, harness and harness bar...just mho
I have bars, seats, harnesses, and an extinguisher in my one of my 930's and in the GTS. If you are going to take the car to the track I highly recommend doing these mods. For spirited driving on the street, these items can still be a good idea.
If you're the kind of guy that spends most of your time polishing and taking relaxing Sunday drives, I don't think you'll be happy, unless you just want the 'look'... but be prepared for a slight inconvenience every so often.
The bars can be a slight PITA if you need to get back there or use the space. They also add a little weight to the car.
Racing seats are great if you're not doing 400 mile trips, if so, don't bother with them. But they do hold you nicely and can offset a little weight from the bars.
Harnesses are a little of a hassle on the street. You're pretty much pinned in your seat, so reaching for something that just feel on the floor will require you to loosen them, or release them. They're bulky, a little bit of a pain to put on, and honestly I feel a little stupid wearing them on the street (racer wannabe-ish, unless you're in a serious car). With that said, they really do offer major protection if they are installed and fitted right. Speaking of which... as mentioned above, make sure you have a good harness bar, roll bar, or cage for the harness to attach to. I've seen guys use them w/o the proper bars and it's VERY dangerous to do so!
I think fitting an extinguisher to the front of the passenger seat is a very good idea. I've never found it to really be in the way, and it's nice to know it's there should it be needed. I have it mounted on the bar in the back of my 930. Again, it's out of the way since that area is useless anyway.
Just my 2 cents.

Very nice Chuck!
One other thing I've been meaning to do in the GTS (already done in the 930) is to add a brace behind the drivers seat, between the bar and the seat.
About 7 to 10 years ago I saw a guy in a 911 spin in front of me at Limerock (in CT), his car hit in the rear fairly hard. I don't know if his seat wasn't bolted in properly or what, but upon impact, his seat broke and his neck was violently snapped on the harness bar. Chuck's picture just reminded me about this because his setup looks very much like the one in that car that spun in front of me.
This was a rare and fairly freak accident, but I now see the value in adding a seat brace or a distribution plate behind the seat! I really should get this added in the GTS sooner rather than later...

Thanks, this is exactly what I'm wanting. The racing seats/harness info is great considering I'm not tracking for a while.
The roll bar and other stuff for spirited ( but safe ) street driving is more to what I do.
I didn't see a thread that put a lot of safety mods together for some1 to read and get ideas for their type of driving. Esp the average DD like me.

Since this event https://www.6speedonline.com/forums/...-last-oct.html I got a fire extinguisher....

I have a daSport Bar, Teamtech harnesses, HALguard extenguisher, Brey-Kraus mounts/adapters, and recently a new UltraShield full containment seat.
My car HAS hit 180MPH on the back straight at VIR once... And likely will again... That's serious "OFF" speeds... A full cage would be more appropriate, but this week we'll get the other car back with it's "full cage" welded in. That'll be TWO full caged cars in the famiy... I don't want to make that kind of commitment with the Porsche just yet.

Here is what I have done for safety during track use...
Fire extinguisher mounted with BK bracket (installed on divers side for reach while secured with a 6 point harness in the event it has to be accessed quickly. I found that while strapped in with a harness, the passenger side location can not be reached. Drivers side mount does not interfere with driving or comfort at all, so I feel it's the ideal spot for it)

BK Fire extinguisher mount (must be used with BK sub-bar)

BK Porsche 996 sub bar

BK Porsche 996 seat belt mount for "clip-on" belts

Simpson 6-point "clip-on" style, cam lock belts

inside clip-on installed

outside clip on installed

Techequipment roll bar - SFI roll bar padding added after installation to cover all metal exposed to the occupants

camera mount for roll bar

GT3 seats, Simpson SFI rated suit/shoes/helmet, R3 CF head & neck restraint, Simpson pull-up "clip-on" style cam lock 6 point harness
