On the fence 01 turbo vs 04 gt3

I've got someone buying my m3 this thursday so I'm getting excited, I thought it would take a little longer to sell my car.

Anyways I found an 01 turbo manual 23k miles original owner for $40k

And then some what locally I found an 04 gt3 with 11.5k miles for $48k

I've searched on here quiet a bit, and it sounds like the gt3 is going to be a drivers car, and give you a lot more feedback and emotion

Where as the turbo is a grand touring car.

And then someone mentioned putting coilovers on the turbo and it will blow the doors off a gt3.

And it's hard for me just go look at one of these cars and expect the owner to take me seriously. I'm only 22, and would be driving up in a base model 09 tacoma, although I do have the money for the turbo and should wait a month, but could pull the trigger on the gt3.

Insight would be much appreciated.

If your 48K GT3 is in Petaluma you might want to consider what a salvage title means.

Means it was in a wreck. It can't be financed and will be harder to resell.

The Petaluma car has been for sale for a year. No one has been interested. That might tell you something.

Check Renlist re this car.

Drive them both. I have owned both and they are completely different cars. You can upgrade a turbo to be as fast or faster but they will still feel entirely different. Given your member name, you may like the GT3 better

I drive my Turbo for the rush, I use an Exige for track work.

Good luck.

I was just about to call him, but thought I'd check this thread first. It was too good to be true! I remember seeing a silver one some time ago on craigslist, wishing I hadn't just bought an m3 and figured it would have been sold. I wonder how bad the damage was, he's probably a pretty motivated seller and would take a $40k cashiers check.

The car might see 2 track days a year, but mostly a sunny day car to and from work. (1 really good right hand turn, a sweeping left, and a sharp right )

trackjunkie,

You might take some time to see which one you want, TT or GT3. Benefits to either. To the very well informed the differences are marked.

I test drove GT3's and TT's ended up with a TT but really I didn't know enough about them before I chose.

This might explain why so many switch cars. I think you can't really know until you have some time in the car.

As an option hang out with some guys, go for a ride, lots of rides, ask them what they like and don't like.

In any case there are many of either for sale if you take your time. Especially, so you don't need to buy a salvage title for no major discount.

Read the rennlist thread on this GT3. You'll learn more than just about the car.

Also you might ask Mooty. Don't know him but he seems like a really nice person that is a major enthusiast and is in SF. Just from reading his posts I would almost guarantee he would provide very good advice. And take some time with you.

Forgot to say NOPE.

Check the Renlist post.

But can't hurt to try either.

A GT3 is a big step up from an M3. (E46?) I've had one of those and a pretty tough R 32 GTR and went with a turbo without a second thought, but I love turbos. Plenty of extra power available if you choose to mod.

Drive both, see what you think. If its a purely track car, get a GT3. If you will drive it on the road and the track, you have to give consideration to the turbo, if 90% of your driving is on the road and 10% on the track a turbo will more than put a smile on your face IMO.

I bought a salvaged car for my kid's first car; insurance coverage could be an issue if you get one... check with your insurance company.

Based on your screen name --- GT3

Based on your intended usage --- Turbo

The 996 GT3 is not a great street car, it's very stiff, and you may not want to get caught in the rain without any traction control at all. Also if you may ever want to mod, the GT3 is fruitless.

I choose the TT for the mod reasons once I saw it could be as fast as the GT3 with little mods.

I agree with this . I drove my friends Gt3 recently , it was very very stiff ...just cant see it being comfortable for street use on a regular basis. Drive both and then you will know.
