AMS Billet K16 2000mile base and 1.3bar Review
AMS Billet K16 2000mile base and 1.3bar Review
So after 2 round trips from PA to NC, hitting the limiter in 5th about 2 dozen times, driving through a foot of snow, sitting in NYC traffic im pretty confident ive seen the ins/outs and up and downs of the AMS Billet K16/EPL Tuning combination.....and its rock out with its **** out. Now first and foremost I want to thank Eric, AMS, and Tony for helping me out up to this point with parts and back and forth on the phone, with the snow my area had it had to reschedule with Tony for a month to get my car on the rollers and aside from him leaving his phone on my dashboard and me realizing this 2 hours away everything has gone off without a hitch.
Rewind a month and a half, my build thread is floating around on here to see the work but I went from basically stock to the billet K16s plus injectors. The car made 409/409 on AWEs dyno before with a Fabspeed hot air intake, Unichip piggyback and, Straight pipes. The previous owner had a fresh clutch put in 3000 miles prior to me buying it and it held like a champ, even after several hard launches and abuse. I put the Ks in and loaded Tonys 1bar base file and the very FIRST time I rolled into it the clutch couldn't take it which made me happy because it certainly wasn't the same car anymore.
Vivid overnighted me a CM Stage III (Thanks guys) and it put it in and gave it some time to get settled before the air started flowing. Even without getting into the loud pedal at all, the car just wanted to go, boost built like crazy it was night and day and I hadn't even ripped on it yet. Put some miles on the clutch and it was time, it was about 40 out and dry and I rolled into it in first and the *** end came out, I smiled, it wasn't nearly that animated before. Torque is instant and redline comes up fast when the snails light off, took me a couple trys to get use to it for a 1-2 without smacking the crap out of the limiter. And I was only in .9bar
As weather would have it we got 44" of snow the following days so a trip to EPL was put on the back burner, and a repeat of fluffy white stuff the following week also halted the plans. The following week found me on a trip to NC, averaging about 80-90 I saw 27mpg....well yea 80-90/180ish a couple times but yea, 27mpg. Car drove better than stock no need to downshift at all even in 6th boost picks right up an you pick up lot of extra ground, just ask the Virginia State Trooper that stopped me
"I swear officer I didn't think I was going that fast a second ago"
The trip went off without any issues, got a chance to get down with a GSXR600 and the car did great...it wasn't ready for big bikes but it will deal out some pain so smaller CC.
Fast forward to today, actually about 3 hours ago, FINALLY I make the trip to EPL and we strap the car down. As im sure Tony will post up we got enjoyment out of the fact that when we strapped the car down for a baseline the car decided it wanted to just keep making power, after 4 pulls it leveled off at 438/480 if I remember correctly. The mad scientist went to work and after some time on 1.3bar the car saw 500/591.... I was out of fuel pump. We went out for a street cruise and rolled into it in second and the passenger side window became the forward looking viewpoint.... job well done. With a quick last flash and a handshake I made my way back to my stomping grounds.
How I didn't get pulled over on the way home is a mystery to me and I will fully admit that there were at least 2 people that no doubt said "look at the ******* in the Porsche" but so sue me I have more boost now it had to be done.
The car is smooth, period, even when the turbos light off its a linear solid pull. Its drives like stock until you lay in it then yea its not stock. Im happy, very happy its a good starting point for me.
Im about as jaded on power as it comes, my last daily driver was Z06 making 916wheel on pump, so me not thinking the car is fast don't take that for anything other than me being an ******* with too fast of a previous car, the kit makes the car roll out. Not only that but its usable take it anywhere and be fast and not have to worry about the car making it back power.
Its great, buy them if your looking into them

First of all, big congrats....I'm sure you're having tons and tons of fun!! I was waiting for a good review on the K16 billets....
I'm guessing there are no chances to achieve such power levels without a custom tune on the dyno at EPL??
What about the tune that comes with the Kit from AMS?

The tunes with the kit are EPL tunes the way it works is you do the install and call Tony and say your ready to flash, you install their software and Tony sends you a base file which was the file that made my perfectly good clutch cry like a little girl. Take the car out for a 3rd pull and report what kind of boost you're seeing then they make a new file to add boost and voilà

Congrats on the set up. Seems pretty healthy for pump gas. I bet the car would really sing with 1.7 bar and race gas! Hopefully Tony will chime in or start a new thread with some overlays with various other turbo set ups at 1.3bar.
