Carrera GT test drive
Paul: The pressure on the 100mm spare is usually much higher and very different construction than the stock tires. It only works with the same type of tire and the same pressure.
With regard to why wider tires are better, there are many factors but a big one (I think the biggest) is that in narrower tires, more of the tread pattern lifts of the ground due to sidewall deflection.

In a month or so my turbo will be finished. It weights 3092 pounds. It will redline @ 10,000 rpm's. It has a few more ci's than a stock turbo, but not as many as the CGT. It should have a hp/weight ratio of about 2.6 to 1.
The gearing will be almost identical to the CGT's in all gears. It does have a very considerable suspension mod and tires have a width that will more than match. The brakes come directly from a GT3 RS.
I'm sure given a little time we'll run into one that wants to play.
By the way, I am a fan of the CGT. It is a great car abeit a little different. I hope to own one sometime in the future.

If I was gonna spend money like that I would have bought a better platform to start with.

I used the spare tire example as a know entity that you could use to envision the difference. I think that contact patch has to be related to tire width to some extent. If you mounted dramatically smaller tires of the same brand/tire pressures on your turbo, I am confident that your contact patch and braking performance would be diminished.
The difference in the GT's braking performance may also be attributed to the ABS threshold, which on the 996TT is very low from my experience at the track in my TT. Perhaps that Carrera GT has a more race oriented programming, which would account for the "staggering" braking performance at higher speeds that have been described by Ben (Ben, I would love a ride also someday)

Paul
Paul, don't confuse static contact patch and dynamic patch and resulting performance. The static statement is correct, but when you get to performance, obvioulsy the wider tires generally perform better. The biggest reasons are sidewall lift and thermal breakdown of the smaller tire (it overheats much easier).
The CGT brakes are likely to be superior on the track and in exreme conditions. I have never disputed that. The performance probably is staggering under those condtitions, but not from a long g increase, but from maintaining the high long g number stop after stop after stop.
Is is quite possible that the CGT has different ABS algorithm with higher performance tires in mind, but I have no data to support this.

If you get one...I want a ride buddy.

Of course we'll go for a drive, Harry. Hope all is well, haven't seen you in a long time!
