Rods Rods Rods......
Rods Rods Rods......
Who wants to settle a score.
Since you 996 guys push your cars to the limit maybe someone can answer this.
I run my 993tt with K24's and race gas at 1.3 bar. Some people seem to think the rods won't hold out at those levels. If I understand it correctly the rods are the same as the 996 and I see X50 guys push it to those levels often.
Last time I checked on the dyno I got 460whp & 474 wtq at 1.1 bar. I believe I am well within safe limits. Any thoughts?

Yah know I spoke to Garret about this and **** I've been pushing more boost than that for over 2 years and put 31k of miles on my car (as have many more) and I don't think they're as weak as people say.. Now shoot NOS or 2bar consistently and then ok... I think you're ok. The other guys will have more Stephen, Todd, Kevin, CJV but even though I need to do mine I haven't yet done it
Like Fat-911 said, the difference is in that the 996 turbo engine is water cooled so the limits are higher on it. Good thing that you run race gas as well, I wouldn't put anything less when running high boost.
Alot has already been said above.
Cooling does indeed have alot to do with it. The rods in the 993tt motor would generally be good to 700 rwhp ....... however the longevity of the motor won't be very good as in race car longevity.
The 996tt will take a little more, however this is subject to how you use the motor. If you push it past the stock redline to 7100-7500 rpm's very often, the rods will suffer. A TIP is alot easier on the rods versus a 6speed. In addition, if you do alot of standing starts with a car that has it's traction connecting to the ground down pat, this also tends to stress the rods.
At 500 or so hp, you shouldn't have any problem other than a little reduced motor longevity as compared to stock motor longevity.

I'm thinking of getting rods this spring. I'm also very interested in a LSD. I hope to see some of you guys finding out what LSD to use before I ship my car south to get the work done!

rods or pretzels?
I have seen a 993TT, 3.8L @ 1.4 to 1.6 bar
boost live for a short while on a diet of PMS (porsche motorsports) connecting rods (something I wouldnt have done), then after a "normal" roadtest, came back with a "knock", it was dissassembled and reassembled twice (not by me!!) and still was knocking. In passing I commented to the tech, jokingly that "I thunk them thar rods were a tad crooked...and with a little salt might taste like pretzels" Anyway they installed Carillos, and I didnt say I told you so...
A set of Carillos should run about 1.8 to 2.0 g's, depending on your parts guy.
Stock rods or PMS rods are safely good for no more than 650 to 700 CHP ( crankshaft HP's) from my experience. Anyway thats my story and I'm sticking to it.
