996tt round headlight conversion idea
I sold my 67 to purchase my 2002. I understand going from air cooled to water cooled but do not understand why they ever went away from the roundish headlights. Before my 67, I owned a 57 speedster. So the slab side does not bother me at all. Oh well, nothing $15 and 15 minutes didn't fix.
^^^ the idea for 996 chassis headlamp was actually revolutionary. The the idea was to create a modular assembly whereby all lighting would be integrated into one assembly. This was done for a number of reasons, cost, ease of assmbly, simplicity. The notion came from racing, from the GT1 and expirimentals programme. Poersche yet again was ahead of it's time. they could have potentially done away with the chrome housing but the concept is an excellent one and very much involved forethought and ingenuity that Porsche is famous for in terms of innovation.
I like my 996 headlights! I honestly think it is super cheesy to try and make a 996 look like a 997 but that is just my opinion.
Noticing the fact that different body paint changes the perception of the unit headlights. Designers know this. The lighter paint schemes blend the headlights, wheras the darker ones really make them stand out..

Personally I would keep the 996 it's signifcinant in several ways
1) first watercooled chassis
2) Chassis known for usage of Metzger engine 3.6L in GT3, GT2, and Turbo
3) Chassis which will have the only different looking headlights over time, this will be a point of uniqueness
4) Car and era closest to the LeMans winning iconic GT1, also using the Metzger 3.6L
5) the only 911 late model chassis to win OVERALL and CLASS results in the rolex 24 Daytona in 2004, #36 RSR - Team TRG.
So next time a 997 or other chassis guy picks on ya....you've got 5 good reasons of why your 996 is special

I have been watching this thread grow. I personally like the headlights on the 996TT. I like the round ones too. Personally - I don't at all like the modified versions (paint, vinyl, plastic, etc) - but to each their own.
I certainly would never feel like a 997 owner "has something over me" - because of the lights. Each model has its strengths...and its weakness. As example - I dislike the interior of the 997. Especially the PCM.
And - none of those 997's will be seeing my front end for long anyway - they will GET A MUCH BETTER VIEW of my taillights!
