Heat Shield on Europipe exhaust: Necessary?
Heat Shield on Europipe exhaust: Necessary?
Last week I pulled off my EP exhaust and it did not have the heat shield that you see on them on the EP website.
I believe that my EP is the older version which did not have the shield. The exhaust, which I ran for more than 15K miles never caused any damage to my bumper. I also noticed that none of the aftermarket exhausts out there have the heat shield, so are they really necessary?

Thanks for asking this for me. (I'm installing his old Europipe Loud with cat deletes on my 996tt right now).
To be more specific, the heat sheilds in question are over the mufflers, as shown here in Europipes image of 996tt: http://www.europipe.be/images.html , but this exhaust does not have them.
The stock 996tt exhaust does have heat shields over the muffelers, but I took those off and they will not fit on the Europipe (nor do my stock dual tips, unfortunately). So, at this point I need to verify I'm not going to melt the bumper or do some other damage by running the exhaust without heat shields over the mufflers.

Here is what Todd K (Protomotive) had to say:
"If it had heat shields, we would have replaced them when
reinstalling it. [confirming that it never had them]
Cat heat shields are no longer required since there are no cats, and
minimal heat would be produced by a straight pipe.
Todd"

I askes Stef and he said all Europipes have heat shields on the mufflers (just like stock exhaust mufflers do). They can ship me one with bolts for $170. He avoided answering my question about whether it was safe to put the heatshieldless Europipe exhaust on my car, likely for liability reasons. I guess thats what I'm probably going to do, unless someone chimes in with info to the contrary?

I did not avoid your question about the heatshields. I told you that the heatshields might not be needed on a catless exhaust.
Most of the heat comes from the cats anyway. In fact the temperature after the cat is higher than the temperature in front of the cat , not because of the friction but because of the chemical reaction.
2 of the people who should know (Todd K and Stef) have both explained that heat is primarily generated by the cats.
Straight pipes don't generate the same heat and that is why I ran this exhaust for over 15K on my car with no problem.
Mike, you should also know that Stef is opposed to running catless for environmental reasons, which I respect. I would never go catless on my daily driver, but my GT2 is a weekend/race car so the low amount of miles and performance advantages justify going catless.

I personally dont care about cats one way or the other as there are much bigger problems for the enviroment then a few fellows running without cats, but I have to admit your rationale made me chuckle, you hardly drive one minute, but the next you have 15k of trouble free miles, you could be a salesman
dont get defensive now, 15000 miles is still 15000 miles, I wouldnt say that was minimal track time, now I agree that spread out over 5 years thats not very much a year. On a side not I thought you picked this car up in 2007? thats not five years last time i checked, when you retire as a professor I think you would make a good salesmen, just a compliment
I have had the car for 3.5 years. The EP was put on by the previous owner a year before I purchased the car from him.
I personally never installed or uninstalled the exhaust (Todd K and my local mechanic Akram, 2 top guys) did the work.
I sold the exhaust to Mike for a little bit less than $2.2K which is more than $800 less than the going rate for used EP's. I did it so that I could avoid the type of hassle that I am now running into.
