Q.. is infamous around these parts
suspension gurus required: suspension problem.

My 996 TT has an interesting problem I have been unable to pin point the cause of.....

Car:
2001 996 TT
RHD
manual
60 000mls
PSS9's
noisy exhaust

Symptoms:
- When taking off from a standing start at normal traffic speed,
the car quite distinctly feels to "clunk" and drop down slightly on the LH rear corner.
However, it sometimes feels like the RH front actually pops up with a clunk.

- Sometimes, not all the time, - when I coast to a stop at the lights, I will feel the same clunk.
the RH again feels & appears ! to pop up slightly ! WTF

Observations:
- NO obvious noise present during the "clunk" [loud exhaust mutes most noises]
- The front suspension has the typical 996 low speed turning clunk to it
- Car tracks well at suburban and highway speeds
- Car is particularly nervous on corners .....rear end is all over the place

Items checked:
- settings on PSS9's checked
- engine mounts checked
- gearbox mount [replaced]
- car placed on 4 post hoist, and all items inspected and re-tightened. #1
- car placed on 4 post hoist, and all items inspected and re-tightened. #2
- new tyres & factory wheel alignment

HELP !
Paul

Control arms or bushings? Bad motor or tranny mounts can clunk.

sorry it's just a guess, don't have enough experience to comment on this car. but on previous cars, the described shift could occur from worn rear subframe bushings. fyi - incase didn't know, subframe's the part all the arms bolt onto, that bolts onto the car body. So where ever the mount points are.

found this post, not sure if you've read already. wouldnt drive around like that until it's sorted. good luck.

Car goes back on the hoist on Wed. I will cover all the bushes in detail.

On my car the rear sway bars are positioned below the control arms. From the picture it looks like yours are above and the bar is upside down. I think your control arms are hitting your sway bar when the suspension compresses. Whoever installed them would not be having me for a customer. I never have any clunks and I track mine.

By bad about the picture, but the symptoms you describe could still fit the problem I described. Check it.
