Engine fan troubleshooting assistance
I've noticed my decklid engine fan is NOT turning on after driving, even after a spirited drive. I did confirm today that the fan is working when the car is running, I pulled over (left the car running) and checked it and it as spinning away.
What should I be looking for ? Checked for codes with the Durametric and nothing. Ran fan tests with the Durametric and they all tested fine.
Either something is disconnected or loose, bad temperature probe/sensor ? Was hoping someone could help me locate the sensor/probe. I've looked on the right side of the engine, but I'm not exactly sure what I'm looking for.
Much appreciated.

I will try that, before the K24/18g's Proto tune, I was running
GIAC on K16's and the fan seemed to go on after every drive (after I parked and came back a few minutes later to check on it).
So if I let the car idle after a spirited drive and the fan comes on, if I promptly turn off the ignition and remove the key, should it continue to run ? I was under the impression it was supposed to do this ?
Maybe I'm paranoid
Crazy or both.

After the engine shut down, for 40 minutes the ECU is taking care of the engine compartment temperature. As soon the temp. is reaching 172F it will start and stop to keep it under 172F... So the fan is triggered at 172. Same thing if the engine is running. The temperature sensor is located a bit aft of the recirculation blower on the right side of the engine compartment. May be the sensor is at fault or the plug is corroded. Pic show you what it's looks like... Also some valuable information here:http://www.renntech.org/forums/index..._1#entry160046

nice one Jflip!
that temp sensor is easy to accidently push into the grommet it sits in. possible the grommet is insulating the tip (sensor).

I had a similar concern as even after spirited driving on a 95 degree day, the fan did not kick on after shutting off the engine. My investigation revealed that the sensor was sitting on the serpentine belt (luck me that it didnt get damaged). I have since zip tied it in place and the fan comes on after the ignition is turned off. Does anyone know how to reseat the sensor in the rubber grommet?
For those of you who like technical specs.....
Turbocharged engine purge fan operation:
There are three possible causes for the fan to be activated in a turbocharged 996 models, but the fan only runs at one speed. The causes are:
Ignition on (for longer than one second) or the engine running, the fan will be activated by the fuel pump relay via the booster resistance cable if the cable has detected a build up of heat (by changing his resistance) from the turbocharged engine's exhaust system.
At a coolant temperature of about 105C or 221F or an engine bay temperature of approx 78C or 172F the purge fan will run until engine bay temp drop to about 60C or 140F.
The engine overheat after shut down protection system is activated for a maximum of 40 minutes after the ignition is turned off and if the engine bay temperature is greater than 25C or 77F . If the engine bay temperature rises to or is already at a temperature in excess of 78C or 172C for more than three minutes the engine bay purge fan will be activated. The purge fan will stay running until the engine bay temperature drops below 78C or 172F
This come from the excellent book from Adrian Streather " Porsche 996 the essential companion"

When I had my Protomotive set-up, part of the blow thru MAF installation was to remove the fan, as it hit the blow thru Y-pipe and the lid could not close. Todd said the fan was not necessary and the removal saved weight...

Hello John don't get mad at me but I have a different view point on that ...I am really surprise with such statement "the fan was not necessary" If Porsche engineer installed such device it is because the heat generated by the engine, exhaust etc is quite important. We do have example of parts that get affected by heat such has the coolant expansion tank. I am sure this plastic tank is affected by heat, the plastic get dried and it is why most of us had to replace the reservoir. There is also a lots of plastic components on top of the engine like sensors, N75 valve (electric change over valve) , intake, wires skin, air change over valve, non return valve, check valve etc all in plastic.... To me getting this heat out is a must especially after a long drive or hard drive when the car sits there with all that heat getting to the top of the engine compartment with only the small grill to escape.... Only my opinion express with respect to a valuable board sponsor
jp,
I am in total agreement with you. I installed the Proto kit myself and when completed, I could not shut the lid. I was never informed about the fan delete and that's when I called and was told that information. I didn't particularly care for it, but went along with it...since then I have reverted back to a conventional Bosch MAF intake system with fan and scrapped the Proto parts. I tend to agree that there must be a reason the Porsche engineers put it there to begin with...so no offense on my part.

When I disagree with someone I'm always worried about his reaction so I am trying to found my best "soft" english word to express myself... My vocabulary is very limited because the first english word I have learn start with as F, the second one also with an F but different ending also the third and the fourth..... It is amazing how you can used this word with different sauce ...
I'm happy that you are open to discussion. You are a nice person John

AC and fan questions
hello every one
Im new owner for 996 tt bought mine 4 months ago after the weather become hot i notice some problems
When i stop in traffic light the ac become very hot and coolent level raising from 80 to 90, , if i stop more time to go to max
When driving it come back to normal i took it to work shop and they said something about 2 fans not working when the car stop and i have to take my car to dealer which is most exepnsive dealer around the world 100 to 200 per hour
Example how expensive here spark plug stoke bosh will costing 30 dollar per plug
I got pinned with coolant pipe month aho they took 1200$ labour to take engine down
So is the fan usualy not working if the car stop?
regards
Faisal
