What wheel Torque number challenges traction?

From my experince traction issues start at about 500 wheel TQ in RWD and traction rapidly starts losing as the torque number climbs.

What's the number in AWD?

Good question, however the difficulty of an accurate answer is compounded for people by such things as gearing, tire size and what range the motor's torque was designed to peak and hold.

I use 315/25/19 Michelin PS2. I am RWD and making 517rwtq on Dynojet. 4 out of 5 times I can launch without wheelspin, 1 out of 5 it will wheel hop which scares me.

On a cold day, I can spin the tires all the way through 3rd gear, with ps2's, which by the way, are the worst tires for straight line traction on the planet. I have no clue how much torque that requires, On a hot day I can still spin them through 2nd gear.

I disagree. If PS2 are not hardened and not old they are the best street tire that I have found for drag racing on the street. I do quiet bit of it and tried Michelin PS2, Bridgestone RE050, Nitto Invo, Toyo T1r, Goodyear KDW2, Pirellis, Nitto 555R DR, Mickey Thompson DR and not countibg the drag radials - Michelin PS2 hooks the best hands down.

On the track my E55 did a 1.78 60' on 275/35/19 PS2s. That car made 565wtq.

On the street my 996tt comes out very hard on PS2s.....just gotta find the right spot

Interesting. I am not the only one who has had this issue. I have talked to several ps2 owners and they all claimed the same problem in straight line acceleration. Lateral grip is excellent, but straight line grip is worse than my newer Nitto INVO's which are far better in a straight line and quieter.

As far as I remember your car should be making more power then mine too (UMW turbos correct?), so are alot of other members' cars.

My first 996tt Vbox 0-60 time was 4.1 on the 19" PS2s RWD , on the street. By far was not my best launch either.

Once again - I do not agree that Invos are superior to the PS2, not even close. That is based on my experience with both in the past year.

I did like the INVOs, good in the rain. Dry traction was pretty good too. Good for the price, but perforamnce wise not even close to the PS2.

As a side note here is what an INVO looked like on my E55 after a 4th gear 180mph run on the dyno. PS2s didnt look like that and neither did RE050s.

When I gun it from 10mph I may get a little wheel spin at 6000 RPM but it is rare. I run PS2's and they seem to grip very well. My TQ number are just an estimate of 580TQ

I have this problem too. My car is stock, but any little imperfection of the road leads to traction issues (nothing bad of course, but I feel it loosing grip). This didn't happen with Continental's.

My car hooks up even from 2nd and up (SMALL amounts of wheel spin) even at 800+rwhp setting. The car makes makes 720-730rwtq, but I have some turbo lag so it's not bad. If I brake boost in 2nd it will spin. If its cold though at 60-70mph brake boosting I could boil all 4 tires without a problem... I am RWD now because of that reason because AWD spinning is not fun!

I am sure I don't have anywhere near your torque, but my turbos kick in so early that, that may be why I spin the tires easier.

245/40/18 & 335/30/18 Toyo RA1s do a really good job of grabbing good clean road surface with my car, even in 1st. Not exactly sure of the AWTQ#, but it should be above 550.

Id say 600tq was where things dramatically changed traction wise, I have the UMW2c and was able to spin tires from 4000rpm through redline in 4th WOT (with PS2's, not as bad with others) but prche951 and I are also at 6000+ASL which makes a difference, maybe 550 or lower at sea level.

If you're really having traction issues, a LSD will resolve this, no way in hell I can spin my tires in the same situation.
