Hmm... I have developed a high pitched, mechanical sounding whine. It's obviously coming from the engine area, it is present at both idle and under throttle. The sound increases in pitch along with the RPMs, does not matter if the car is hot or cold, does not matter if clutch is engaged or not. No codes and no detrimental effects (yet). Any ideas?

 

Power steering pump or serpentine idler pulley

 

Have you tried to isolate the sound to point in the engine area. ie Alternator, Air Con pump, pulley , tensioner or even clutch area( release bearing)
Have a good listen and narrow it down as it could be a little hard for any 6 speed member to help without some more facts. Why not use your mobile phone and record the sound and post on here.

Nope, makes no difference. I searched and saw the threads regarding pentosin levels or the valve leading to the pentosin reservoir but it does not seem to apply here since the clutch does not affect the sound.

Fuel pump is in the tank up front.

 

Well, here is the solution for people doing searches in the future. I was due for an oil change, so I had it checked while at my indy shop. It was one of the serpentine belt tensioners... I'm having all of them and the belt replaced, I'm looking at $1100 for it. The vast majority of that is labor. Sucks, but at least it wasn't something more serious.
