I would try to see exactly what the GT2 had and make an effort to get it well fixed because to me there is a big difference between a GT2 and GT3.

Wow. I was dreading clicking on the thread, looks like it was a good outcome!

It'll fit, I run a 997 shifter in my 996. Be sure to post up pics of the new whip when you take delivery!

It's not going to be cheap but that red GT2 is an amazing car and it's worth the $20-30 extra money to have that car back and when you mod her it's night and day between the GT3 and the GT2.

GT2 is a great car but id rather drive a boxster or cayman stock then a broken non working gt2.

i know the feeling i havent driven my car in almost a year.

i would have done the same thing the OP did

Maybe being in your shoes(local expresion) at this moment.....but when time runs, let say within 2 years you have your car back and well moded and runing excellent....you'll be very happy about waitting to get her fixed. But if you changed her for a 996 GT3 within 2 years you'll be sorry if you realy like Porsches turbo.

Agreed! Sorry to hear about your troubles.. I have put over 16k miles on my GT2, a good majority of them being track miles No problems *knock on wood*

Best of luck with your 3RS.. Wish you would have gotten to feel what a GT2 is capable of, it's special

Hey, 20-30K seems high if the motor hasn't been damaged...

20k seems to be the going rate for anybody to open these engines. Seems high to me, but that is what the market dictates. The price of bearings and seals needed for a typical rebuild is 2-3k. Add another $800 for a new IMS shaft. That leaves 17k for the rebuild which equates to 170 hours at $100 an hour. I have yet to understand how the price of a 996tt rebuild costs what it does. Even if you have to buy new tools for the rebuild that would equate to tools @ $5k plus 50 hours labor @ $5k(50 hours @ $100 an hr) and if you change the seals bearings/gaskets and ims that is $4k in parts that equals 14k. This is for bottom end only. Are people getting everything replaced regardless of condition?

Now a top end rebuild may be where the other expense is, but that still seems high overall.

sure you can find a used 996tt motor but now you nolonger have a numbers matching car(wont matter now but could on resale)

you put in a motor that may or may not be in better shape.

and also you have to change many parts off the original engine to the new one as they are a bit different

k roughly 15hrs book time to drop motor (100$x15=1500)

probably 10hrs on swapping parts from gt2 motor to 996tt(intake manifold intake tubing etc...) Turbos exhaust etc.(1000)

this includes no extra gaskets o rings fluids from teardown
figure 1000$ for misc parts

now you have 13,900 for motor (no shipping figure about 750)

and some shops even charge an additional 15hrs to reinstall new motor.

so 4500$ labor
1750 in parts and shipping
13,900 for motor

thats 20150$ and you still have used probably not guaranteed motor, from a 996tt in your gt2
