996 GT2 dead...
20k seems to be the going rate for anybody to open these engines. Seems high to me, but that is what the market dictates. The price of bearings and seals needed for a typical rebuild is 2-3k. Add another $800 for a new IMS shaft. That leaves 17k for the rebuild which equates to 170 hours at $100 an hour.
I have yet to understand how the price of a 996tt rebuild costs what it does. Even if you have to buy new tools for the rebuild that would equate to tools @ $5k plus 50 hours labor @ $5k(50 hours @ $100 an hr) and if you change the seals bearings/gaskets and ims that is $4k in parts that equals 14k. This is for bottom end only. Are people getting everything replaced regardless of condition?
Now a top end rebuild may be where the other expense is, but that still seems high overall.

Bearings in bottom end not including the IMS is about 900
oil pump 900-1300 996tt/gt3
rings 750
misc gaskets tensioners and orings easily add upto 1500
this is assuming the liner and head surface are perfect which is highly unlikely if you blew the head gasket. if you lost the oil pump its likely you need to grind/polish the crank, change bearing sizes full tear down of head and replace anything damaged from low oil lifters (1500 a set) cams etc.
so for stock no machine work no tax or shipping costs added in is 14,050$(no head work performed either, not even a head retorque (33hrs labor cams have to be removed to torque heads 3300$)
this is not upgrading anything
3.8 kit 5500-7k depending on source most the time doesn't included install or machine work
head studs 900$ roughly doesn't include machine work for install upto 1500$ for this
special MLS gaskets to hold the boost range from 200-400 each (800$)
head tear down is in the 1500-4k range depending on who does it
3-4k for head port job and then you need new valve job 1500-1700
cams about 4.5k for the machine work and regrind cam for exhaust only
then since you did all this work making more power now you need a tune for it.
still havent bought a tool or conquered any mis haps broken electrical items on R&R which happen
none of these are my prices, these are an average of what ive seen industry wide some of these prices are even lower then what i first saw n got quoted.
here in the usa the last place i found with a crate motor that was OEM porsche was i believe 29k not installed from suncoast and when i tried to place an order a chap on here from cali had it reserved so i couldn't even order one at that price =(
i found others but most dealers quote you like 37k or some stupid prices and then they cant even get one thats not a remanufactured unit.

i know kevim from UMW has a great connection for motors for the 17k range.
Why are you looking for a new motor OS? Just curious.

and everyone just turns their head and blames everything under the sun but their product n work.
GO EVOMS but, they said they be happy to show me where i can have it rediagnosed at thier affiliate and rebuilt at my cost with no discounts or help

now maybe ya understand all my questions Scott =)
thanks for taking time to answer them.
cant afford to do this again.
Ya, I understand completely now, bro. Ask all the questions you want. My knowledge is limited, but I'll do whatever I can to help.
Sorry to hear that OS. Without breaking any rules are you allowed to mention all parties involved? Who in Houston did you use? I hope it gets sorted out properly. IIRC, sounds similar to what happened to BigBadBen.
