Anyone track a AWD with the addition of a LSD at the rear? Seems if you could keep the inside rear wheel from spinning the AWD would come into effect less. I tracked my car tons this year, always AWD. I recently pulled the center driveshaft out and have been running in RWD. Without the LSD I feel it's going to struggle on the track getting out of the tighter turns.

I didn't mind the AWD on the track, I've driven a 997 GT3 and while very different in execution they have similar lap times. The GT3 is nice as you can easily steer it with either the wheel or the gas (on and off at the limit), the 996TT I think would behave the same way with a LSD, to a lesser degree due to compression.

Do it. Just do it right. Minimum is a corner balance with you in the car (for hours) and add front camber, trust me! Adjustable bars help, good coilovers are a must but the raw feel is sooooo much nicer and steering is on another level (positively). I wouldn't go back. I've tracked my car a few times (nothing crazy) and it is still extremely capable and went round and round faster than almost anything else out there those days so it's plenty unless you want go racing. If you can do a LSD, go for it as it should make it that much better but for most folks, it may be overkill.

Aggressive canyon runs are still very manageable and your overall suspension tweaking can keep you safe as long as you don't make idiot decisions and expect the car to save you. I run PSM off pretty much all the time now but it will still kick in if needed at the edge... FYI I'm running Alpha 28's with pretty much all of the supporting mods. Maybe 550+ to the wheels with QUICK spool and I can light up my Toyo rears (hey, they were cheap) when I want but it's very manageable and yes, you can drift it a bit and scare your passengers when they start to get "comfortable"...

IMHO RWD is the way to go. Like KATO said, A proper chassis setup and a great LSD will make the car a blast to drive. I feel that the AWD actualy upsets the chassis while applying power. The car goes into a push (under-steer) you keep your foot in it to track out of the corner, you will start to see an over-steer happen. It makes the car very uncoupled. With the front Diff out of the way,(-70 lbs) you can convert your front uprights to GT3/GT2 and take full advantage of the better geometry. Now you have a planted car that will build your confidence as a driver.

Betim knows what he's talking about so listen, hahaha.

Whassup, Betim! Long time! I saw one of the E63's that you worked on earlier today at my buddy's, local shop (AutoTalent).

Hope to see you guys again soon down in that far off place I call "Orange County".

Not to get too far off topic but I'm setting up a private trackday at Streets on 9/23. Let me know if you and a few guys (Brad?) can take a Thursday off and come have some fun with us! Bring whatever you want! I'll bring out the Turbo and my older Beemer Beeter racecar for fun...

Subscribing for the progress.....

I'm sure it won't be easy to balance out the chassis, but the plain fact is that you're going to be dropping a ton of unnecessary items which should contribute to less drivetrain loss by going 2WD. Good luck!

ponzz is infamous around these parts
I'm sure I will catch some flack for this, but oh well...

I just bought an '01 turbo, stock except for PSS9 and short throw shift. My '07 corvette with an exhaust and tune feels more powerful and MUCH easier to drive. I've tracked the vette (390RWHP with stock suspension and hawk race pads and DBA rotors) quite a few times and simply smoked every porsche I have come across from 996tt's to gt3's (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=YBI7v6ebEzY). I am a fairly good driver, but I dont think my skills are good enough to simply destroy every porsche I've come across.

Did I make the wrong decision? I fell in love with the 996tt; it is simply smoother, more complex and has so much more class than the vette. But is the vette a porsche killer on the track? Please tell me I dont need a dedicated track vette. I hope the RWD conversion helps along with an ECU flash.

Just don't understand why people want to sacrifice all the extra control and power? Better idea would be to upgrade your fwd section of your 996tt.

you have nothing to worry about

The following video shows infinitely more capable drivers in corvettes getting decimated by a turbo.
