996TT vs 997s
996TT vs 997s
I read an online article that indicated the 2005 carrera S was nearly matched for 0-60 times with the 996TT...and nearly matched for 1/4mile time with 996TT.
Unfortunately, I cant find the article to post it...
Is this true? The 997 carreraS has around 360 hp ... how could it possibly be faster then a 420hp 996TT? Is it lighter?

There has already been at least two threads on this. Not sure why these two cars are even being compared. That's like comparing a 348 Ferrari to a F430. they are not even close.
are you interested in the 997 versus the 996tt? is this why you ask? if so there is a ton of threads on this

the biggest advantage the Carrera2s has over the turbo is weight. At 3200 lbs it is about 200 lbs lighter. With rwd it puts all the power to the rears and has less drivetrain loss. Assuming 360 bhp, for the carreraS.
The turbo weighs in at 3400 lbs and has 420 bhp. Assuming a loss of 15% for a rwd car and 18% for an awd car, the carreraS rwd is 306 rwhp. The turbo has 345 awhp. So the power to weight ratio of the carreraS is 3200/306=10.45. The p/w ratio of the turbo is 3400/345=9.9.
So the power to weight ratio is very close. However, the carreraS being NA has a much more responsive power band. It will feel faster in the low ranges where most people drive. And it may be a bit faster to 4000rpm, but once the turbos are at full boost, the 996tt will slowly pull away.
of course this is all theoretical

here is a vid of a pdk 997S vs a 996tt. The 997pdk will destroy a regular 997s.

the 997pdk, got almost a 2 car jump off the line and it took the 996tt almost the enire run to make up the difference. A 997s would not have made up the difference.

Another thing to consider is that you are comparing stock to stock numbers, which is fine. Keep in mind, though, spending ~5k for a reflash and exhaust for the turbo will give you major hp gains that would be very difficult to achieve with the 997s. Turbo engines provide a much higher (insane) upper limit to the hp.
In the OPs defense, I think the two cars get compared because the cost is about the same. Many here, including me, have had to make a similar decision - newer 997 vs. 996tt for about the same money. I would strongly suggest driving each of the cars. Drive a 996tt with a reflash and you'll forever want "Turbo" on your lid.

If pure adrenaline pumping fun is what you seek, drive a tuned 996tt.. unless you have the cash for the 997tt. Which actually has nice styling cues and is even more fun to drive.
definately dont got enough cash for a 997TT... I plan to buy a 996TT... but I doubt I will find one by the time the snow falls.
Some cars are rated at the crank... some are rated at the wheels.

No car is rated at the wheels. All are rated at the crank. Some are underrated so they put down the same or more hp at the wheels than what the manufacturer claims at the crank but the rating is still at the crank.
