Thinking about new turbos..advice needed

I've read quite a few threads about some of the turbos that are available for the 996tt.

My goals are not really tracking or 1/4, but I want a more powerful, reliable turbo that works well as a daily driver. I think that about 600hp is as far as I would want to take the car. What I am much more interested in is a flat power curve and a turbo that spools up as early as possible.

I already have headers, exhaust and a tune (which I will update after the new turbos). I think that I might also have a upgraded fpr and possibly even injectors.

There are a few options out there. The 911tuning ski850GT is particularly interesting to me, but I don't want to drop several thousand $ and then find out that I went the wrong way.

Thanks for the help.

Silly question, but what turbos do you have on the car right now? There could be some lower priced options available to you (ie: K24/18g) that might meet your goals for less money.

I'm not entirely sure what the turbos are now. Is there an easy way to tell the difference between K16 and K24?

Your turbos are most likely either k16/16g's, k24/18g. Looking at your picture in your other thread, you have a blouch built wastegate upgrade. Call me today if you would like to discuss how we can identify your turbos and possibly work with what you have!

Was this car originally from the Tri-State area... the color combination and turbo upgrade is starting to ring a bell.

I believe that the car was either in PA, CT or NJ originally, but I can't remember now. If I give you the VIN, can you confirm? I would love to find out if you were the tuner and understand all of the mods that were done. This thing pushes up to 1.4bar at times so I know it has something good.

Email me to VIN. I will also email the customer who I think owned it.... I think it has k16/16g's.

.
thats a big boys kit... cars with this set up do 700+rwhp and have a flat power band... and yes its more then just turbos, injectors, and a tune... but you get what you pay for... and then some.... Just ask a few who had the other turbo kits and went with this set up....
But that might be a little too much for you.... your looking for 600rwhp Im guessing.
You can easily do the same kit with the turbos of your choice... like the A28s or A3071s for example... Or even k24/18g or k24/20gs... the supporting mods are what you will need either way.. no matter which turbo you go with...

Good luck on your journey ....

I live near Frederick MD and work near Baltimore MD. I would definitely like to see the ski800 in action. Send me a PM next time that you know you will be in the Baltimore area. Likewise I'll send you on if I am headed north. Thanks!

Sorry for the novice question, but what is the A28s or A3071s? I've now established that the current turbos are not stock. If it turns out that I have K24, would the k24/18g be the logical move?

I'm going to take some additional pictures of the engine because I think that I also have upgraded fuel components (injectors, fpr, etc).

If you have the Porsche K16 or K24 turbos on your car, there will be a little blue or yellow tag on the turbos that give a part number that starts with 996 XXX XX. If you see one of those, right the number down and one of us should be able to identify which of the turbos you have. If your car pushes 1.4 bar boost, I'm guessing that you already have either a K16/16G, GT28/K16, or K24/18G hybrid turbo upgrade since your stock turbos won't handle that kind of boost. If your turbo housing says Garrett or you see a Tial label then you likely have one of the Tial Alpha turbos (A28s or A30s). There are other turbos out there but these are the most common.

You should try and get in contact with the previous owner and see what all he did. Sounds like you might be set up pretty good already.

I'm learning quite a bit here. I'll post the part number or updated pics if it doesn't have the Porsche number.

Can k16/16g push 1.4 bar?
