Weight of Brakes

Has anyone taken weight measurements of the various 996 braking options? I would have thought that once you have reached the pinnacle of braking performance, that the next step would be to reduce the unsprung weight. Am I missing something?

Cheers.

I will get the Brembo weights, both for the GT and Le Mans offerings.

Cheers.

I will weigh a set of stock brakes. I think I saw a set lying around at EVO the other day. If so, I'll bring my scale over and ask Todd if I can weigh them.

wow! now that you say that i think my GT3 brake kit came in three seperate boxes 1) with two rotors/calipers/pads/brake lines (70 lbs) 2) with two rotors/calipers/pads/brake lines (70 lbs) and 3) with the wheel carriers. so your numbers look right which suggest an 80 lb unsprung weight savings. that's spectacular.

I came up with 40 lbs total... about 10 per corner. If I did my math correctly.

Still, a very nice reduction in USW.

Yeah. Still definitely worth doing if I can fit them under the 18s...

msindi,
The Brembo GT front caliper weights are for the 8-piston. Here is a photo of the rear Le Mans caliper:

Here are the available options for 996TT Brembo brake upgrades. The 18" wheel will not accommodate the Le Mans system. Only a "true" 18" wheel (this needs to be measured) will accommodate the Le Mans system. Contact BeastPower for exclusive 6speedonline.com pricing:

Cheers.

Beastpower:

Thanks! Finally hard numbers.

Here are some totals:

Stock to Brembo GT - 27lb USW savings, $185/lb

Stock to Lemans - 39.8 lbs USW savings, $314/lb

I went to Wilwood racing brakes for my Countach and pulled 48 lbs USW off the car. I could notice an improvement in handling over rough surfaces primarily. I didn't have a data acquisition system installed to compare before and after at that time. I did not retune the suspension. I primarily changed the brakes to improve cooling (curved vanes compared to straight stock vanes) but got a real nice performance increase as well.

I will look at upgrading the brakes once I get out on the track.
