Question: What is best upgrade with ability to keep stock exhaust.. keeping it quiet?
Question: What is best upgrade with ability to keep stock exhaust.. keeping it quiet?
I have an 04 996 TT Cab with 7,900 miles on it. It is not an S model so it should have around 420hp. I am currently in Stuttgart, Germany doing the Porsche Driving Experience and there was a 997TT Turbo S Cab in our group... I was stuck with a C4S... Had a blast..
Anways, that makes 520 or 530hp which is great and it sounds great as well. Here are my questions.
1) What turbo does that stock 997TT have.. 2009 model?
2) How much different is the exhaust on the 997.2TT vs. a 996TT?
3) What upgrades are good to do and still see gains without replacing stock exhaust... I like the quiet sound now... motor is enough.
- turbo boost pipes?
- turbos?
- ITB upgrade?
- intake plenum?
- intercoolers?
- ECU flash?
4) What is the best upgrade for the money... the least $$ with the most gain in HP?
5) Would purchasing lightly used upgraded turbo's be a bad idea... or a cost saver?
It would be nice to end up with 500hp and call it good, but not sure what the best way is to get there. Turbos seem to be the most expensive upgrade but have the best results.. What would it cost to get 500hp?
Any advice on this? I recently sold my 87-930 so I am familiar with the intercooler, exhaust, turbo game but I figured this exhaust was less restrictive than my older turbo and maybe could stay around to keep the car from getting to loud... trying to avoid the old 930 noise (straight pipe) sound.
Any help is appreciated.

Bryan

the exhaust is very restrictive so thats where your gains start. with 400cel cats like CA cars need and a quite higher flowing exhaust you would probably be happy.
flash, and exhaust are you options as everything else needs a better exhaust to make it worth while.
you could have your k16's turned into 16g's fopr 1200 or so from blouch but with stock exhaust your gonna choke em a good bit.
could do an air filter setup like the dual snorkle intake and a Under drive pulley.

1) What turbo does that stock 997TT have.. 2009 model? VGT (variable vain turbos)
2) How much different is the exhaust on the 997.2TT vs. a 996TT? (different exit location and a good bit different design)
3) What upgrades are good to do and still see gains without replacing stock exhaust... I like the quiet sound now... motor is enough.
- turbo boost pipes? Not an upgrade if your talking about the silicone coouplers the restriction is in the couplers and the intake pipe size, but to make use fo this you need new intercoolers, bigger turbos, y pipe, and the rest of the supporting mods to make 600hp
- turbos? 16g at blouch is a good cost effective mod but to make full use you need alot more mods
- ITB upgrade? might get an increase but you wont see much as the rest of the restriction is held up before the TB/plenum
- intake plenum? see above
- intercoolers? this is a nice upgrade noticeable in longer runs and summer time temps
- ECU flash? definately will give you a boost in performance
4) What is the best upgrade for the money... the least $$ with the most gain in HP? flash/exhaust/intercoolers/ under drive pulley wouldn't be bad either
5) Would purchasing lightly used upgraded turbo's be a bad idea... or a cost saver? yes and no if they are in good condition they will be great addition to your car but if they are too big for your stock exhaust and piping you will have boost control issues tryign to run high boost and the turbos wont be able to breathe if everything else stays stock.

A flash with the OEM exhaust is OK. It's probably the best bang for the buck in terms of a power upgrade.
Also, we have exhaust/flash bundles that can save you some money, if you are buying both items. If you decide to do either one or both, you can contact me and I'll answer any questions you may have. I have a lot of personal experience with entry level flashes and exhausts from when I first purchased my car...

If you're intent on keeping your stock exhaust then just go with a quality flash. A flash is the biggest bang for your buck. If you go with a larger turbo, as was mentioned, you're severely choking your system by sticking with the stock exhaust (translation= you're wasting your money).

Check out the PBK exhaust. It is a modified stock exhaust and very "affordable" by P-car standards. I will probably go that route also. I already have the EPL flash which made an amazing difference in the car, both in drivability and power. I think with a flash and free flowing exhaust you will be at or very close to 500 hp at the crank.
ECU flash will be the biggest bang for the buck hands down. If you catch the timing right, the board sponsors on here occasionally offer flash deals for around $1K. You could also upgrade to the GT2 turbos (K24) with a flash and keep stock exaust and that would give you more power too. If you are intent on keeping stock exhaust, I think your options will be limited because, as I've learned, that is the biggest botleneck. I still have stock exhaust myself but want to get somthing that fits for me since I don't want a loud droning exhaust either. Do your homework and ask a lot of questions to figure out exactly what works for you since everybody wants something a little different.
i spoke with tym switzer about a exhaust as quiet as stock that has cut outs to make it straight pipes when u really wanted power he makes these for the 997tt and said it could be done for a 996tt might be worth a call in to neil to discuss
Thanks
Guys,
Thanks for all the help and advice. When I return from Germany I will have to spend some time looking into this.
It seems that a flash and upgraded (quiet) exhaust is the best option. I recently noticed in the for sale section there was an exhaust that had some staight pipes in place of something else for $500. Would this work?
Since I live in CA I also need to keep in mind passing emissions. With a flash does this change my ability to pass emissions? Not sure if you have to reload stock numbers every year to pass then just reboot the flash.
On my 930 I had to change the exhaust every two years which is much easier on that car (30 minutes or so) to get smogged. I would like to leave whatever I put on and just be all good.
Keep the advice coming. This is great information for when I pull the trigger.
