At what point do you need bigger intercoolers?

With a flash, exhaust, and a K&N drop in you'll be right around 400-420 wheel maybe a little more (with your k16's). You'll be fine with stock coolers till you start pushing major air like a 24-18g or bigger.

i would not recomend a K&N filter for a vehicle with a MAF sensor as the car pulls the oil out of the k&N from being oiled it coats the MAF and kills it.

I ran a K&N for over two years and never blew one MAF. I wouldn't recommend one simply because the paper filter flows better.

all depends on who apply's the oil and how much it can easily happen im sure you are familar with all the trouble evoms had with their intake setup they dont use a K&N anymore..

Why wouldn't you want a larger intercooler with stock turbos?

This is crucial when running higher boost levels with a tune alone.

Higher boost levels create large amounts of heat. You definitely would want cooler air intake temperatures.

Cooler air charge means more power!

I think there is some benefit to running bigger/better ICs with stock K-16s especially with a flash. But you will see much more significant improvements with new ICs once you are using bigger turbos. IOW, the more boost/volume you are pushing the greater the benefit of ICs...

Thanks so much for the responses everyone. I need to do more research before I jump into this.

I guess I assumed that since the X50/S/GT2 all had K24s that maybe the K16s were giving all the boost they could already. I suppose if I can squeeze a few more PSI out of them, my money would be better spent on a better IC and exhaust as a stepping stone to more power down the road?

Are the ICs out of the 997.2 turbo a good choice, or would you go aftermarket?

Absolutely, You will be amazed at how much power your car will gain with a tune and exhaust.

Regarding intercoolers, they can be replaced up front, but it is not totally necessary with the k16s. I am replacing mine with the 997.2 version, but am running an enlarged y-pipe and intake. I am trying to (eventually $$) get the pinch points out of my system with the eventual goal of upgrading the turbos and having all of the other mods "in place"

997.2 units should work great with your k16s, but unless you are a DIY, you will be slaughtered by a porsche mechanic for their time to fit them. Aftermarket units can be bought "plug and play"

Of course you could just buy the following:-
Stage 1 - Exhaust, DV's, 997.2 intercoolers & tune (should be safe on stock clutch)

Then at a later date.....

Stage 2 - 2nd hand k24 turbos upgraded to k24/18g's, 5bar FPR (or a set of larger injectors), upgraded clutch & retune.
I'll revise my previous post (after reading the excellent tutorial on installing 997.2 intercoolers & that it's not a simple job!).

Thinks I'd do the following now:-
Stage 1 - Exhaust, DV's & tune (should be safe on stock clutch)

Then at a later date.....

Stage 2 - 2nd hand k24 turbos upgraded to k24/18g's, 5bar FPR (or a set of larger injectors), 997.2 intercoolers, upgraded clutch & retune.
