At what point do you need bigger intercoolers?

I am new to the world of modifying the 996TT, however I am about to launch into it headfirst.

I have an 03 TT, non S or X50.

At the moment my plan was to get a pair of K24s from Evolution Motorsports along with their stage one kit which is basically an intake and an ECU tune.

My question is, how much boost and or HP can the stock intercoolers do a good job with? Also, did the 996 GT2 have different intercoolers then the regular turbo? With the EVOM stage one and K24s, I imagine the HP would be right around 500 or maybe a little more. Will the stock clutch hold the power?

I have ZERO plans on taking the car to the strip or ever launching it. I use it to scare my girlfriend and take to the local road course.

Thanks

GT2s cane with slightly better ICs...
stock clutch will hold. how many miles?
It always helps to put on better ICs.... thats a no brainer... now when it comes to other parts... thats a different story... Get a free flowing exhaust if you don't have one...
Need any help, let me know..
good luck
markski

Based on that current GT2 RS intercooler upgrade thread, I'd say there is room for improved intercooling pretty much from day one on a stock 996TT. It's pretty cool to see the results gained from actual datalogging.

Yes GT2, x50, S all have different turbos and intercoolers. they have k24s.

I know you are not asking for us to critique your plan, but you are about to dump a good bit of money in an incomplete system. 7-8 thousand dollars and you are buying an intake, a tune, and a pair of k24s. You are still overlooking one of the critical parts - exhaust. Then you have to install it all. If you save your all of your money and only spend 1 thousand on tuning your k16s, you will essentially have the same power.

Don't get me wrong, EVOMS has some awesome products, but buying regular k24s is not going to do much for you vs. a tuned k16. And your the intake is adequate until you start really putting some air through those turbos.

MY recommendation with 8 thousand dollars would be this- buy a set of used k24s from the classifieds (1.5k), rebuild them as k24/18g (1.5k) tune them (1k), buy one of the many exhaust systems in the classifieds (1.5k), 997.2 intercoolers (1k), DVs (300), then upgrade the clutch and fuel system.

You will have a freaking bullet train for the same price.

Aero...do yourself a favor and give Markski a call. I have his stuff on my car and it is just amazing. He doesn't corner you with BS packages like a lot of tuners do. He goes at YOUR pace with YOUR budget and helps you plan for the future which will save you a ton of $$$ and will put big smiles on your face and wallet in the long run. Besides...how many Porsche guys are running 9's in the 1/4 besides him? lol

Of all the tuners on this board, Marski is the only one I would trust. My gut feeling about the other ones are not so good. TPC yes, for road racing but mostly focus on gt3.

I need intercoolers, and i only have a flash/exhaust and I need intercoolers for road racing. I want to get Marskis, but with the option of the gt2rs intercoolers i dont know atm, but it dosen't matter. I have some time to think about it before i do this mod. If i were to go, bigger turbos, for sure marski, but i dont plan to.

Aero-

WHO will be doing your work? What tuner do they know/like?

You should not be intimidated, nor should you be romanced by website content. Reach out and talk to a few guys.

I totally agree with NOLA911

Of course you could just buy the following:-
Stage 1 - Exhaust, DV's, 997.2 intercoolers & tune (should be safe on stock clutch)

Then at a later date.....

Stage 2 - 2nd hand k24 turbos upgraded to k24/18g's, 5bar FPR (or a set of larger injectors), upgraded clutch & retune.

Well, I had stock IC's with hybrid turbos and a tune. At the track, I would start at 117.3-118.1 mph trap and would end the day at 115-116 mph. I had a set of GT2's, which I did install, before I put on the ap/b6 IC's. I did not run them on the track, but the feel never changed at all. Over extended driving it felt like it handled soak better and I did not loose power, but I never ran them at the track. Then I put on the B6(which is a really good quality pair) and my trap speed went up to 119.6x best and never dropped below 118.41 on that same day. So I saw at least a 2 mph gain and they handled the heat much better than the stockers. In fact one day, I had the track all to myself for 3-4 hours and I was going through, then turning around doing it again and again etc. Trap speed never dropped below the 118's. and it was a 90 degree day.

yup, a friend had rented the track for tuning purposes so I got to play around while they were under the hood of the car half the day.

Needless to say, I replaced trans fluid and oil after that.

Yes I'm totally with you on this one. Most logical route and cost savings especially if your going diy.
