heavy clutch
heavy clutch
Guys...I'm new to being the proud owner of an 02 996tt. Bought from Scott here on the forums and was taken care of like a baby.
I've put 1500 miles on it since rounding about 24k total. The concern I have is that the clutch is VERY heavy on startup. No problems afterwards and no issues found during PPI.
Thoughts on the issue? How about cost? Probably better to get looked at sooner than later but was looking for an idea of the issue prior This taking her in.
Thanks for any insight.

Not likely to be caught during a PPI unless their is active leaking going on from the accumulator or slave. If you had known about the heavy clutch at cold start when the PPI was done, your mechanic could have told you that the accumulator and/or slave is going bad. This is a common problem with the 996tt and 997tt. I am in the exact same boat as you. Bought my car back in May and a couple of months ago I noticed a heavy pedal at cold start after sitting for awhile. I am thinking of going with the GT2 slave conversion and would suggest you look at this rout as well. If you simply fix the accumulator and/or slave you can look forward to doing this reapir again in about 3-5 years. My car had all records when I bought it and had the slave and accumulator redone about 5 years ago so looks like it is right on schedule to go bad again. The GT2 conversion will result in a heavier clutch pedal for normal use since there will no longer be a hydraulic assist but it is a fix that won't reliable brake again in the future. I hate the feel of the hydraulic assist clutch anyway since clutch engagement is so hard to feel. I plan to drive a GT2, GT3, or a 996tt that has the conversion to ensure I like the feel.

Mine used to have this problem just in the morning before going to work. Then it happened everytime I stepped into the car. Now it even happens occasionally when driving. It really pisses me off.
Can anyone in Atlanta tell me of a place that will install Evoms GT2 kit? The dealers don't seem to want to touch it.

GT2 Slave/Cylinder
Do yourselves a favor and purchase a GT2 clutch slave/cylinder kit. I had two accumulators go on me within three years. Replaced it with the GT2 in April of this year and could not be happier. The clutch is stiffer than OEM 996TT, but that's not saying much. I often get stuck in stop and go and have no gripes about the GT2 clutch. If you've had older 911s (I have a 1987 Carrera) the clutch feel is very similar...much more tactile and overall a better experience. Purchased my GT2 conversion from EVOMS for approx $1000 and am very pleased with the build quality. I wish I had done this conversion after the first failed accumulator, it would have saved me a lot of $$$$.
You are the man! That was my next question on where to get one. I am not going to switch to the GT2 conversion. My car sees mostly street time (only track 3-4 times per year) and even though I am a bodybuilder I don't want to be sitting in traffic with a heavy clutch. Say what you want but for $130 and a few hours of my time every few years it seems well worth it to have a lighter clutch.
I really appreciate everyone's willingness to respond. You guys are great!
