Dealer Response to 2nd Gear Pop Out
I just got approval for a new transmission for my second gear pop-out, despite some over-revs. As my clutch is slipping due to flash I will get a new one installed at the same time. I'd like to hold 650-700 crank just in case I decide to do more than just flash/exhaust and am currently leaning to:

Sachs Stage II with replaced dual mass flywheel.
Interestingly, my car had an aftermarket short shifter kit that the dealer found was installed incorrectly (this was not told to me when i bought it CPO). They fixced it at no charge, but still had the pop-out, so they moved towards the new transmission as mentioned. However, they are recommending replacing this aftermarket SSK with the OEM SSK ($1300) as even after their tech tuned it as much as possible they said it wasn't 100% right. Suggestions? Stick with this aftermarket? Pay a bunch for OEM SSK? Or replace with a stock shifter for only $279. I've never driven a manual without the short shifter so not sure if it makes a huge difference.
So:
1: Will the Sachs Stage 2 handle as close to stock as possible with capacity up to 700 hp as website claims?
2. What should I do with the shifter?

$1300 sounds like a lot for the OEM SSK.
I've been looking into installing the 997 SSK and was quote ~$500 parts and 1 hour labor to install.
Which dealer is doing the work for you?
I purchased an OEM 997 SSK from Suncoast and it was less than $500 shipped. See if you can work something out with them since that parts price quote sounds ridiculous! (unless there are other parts not mentioned or something)
UPDATE: PCNA came back with a non-approval for warranty repair due to DME overrev report. However, much appreciation goes out to the folks at Porsche of Arlington as they pulled all of the TSB's and made the case that the reason for the additional damage was due to the intial build error. PCNA has now authorized a full rebuild of the trans at no cost to me...except for the additional 1.5 weeks on top of the already 1.5 weeks the car has been there. But, it will have new gearsets, new synchros, new clutch, new carrier mount (997 upgrade). All in all, the dealer did a good job.
Who was your service dude over at Porsche of Alrington? I'm a new P-car owner and will be using this shop for dealership related visits - do you happen to remember his name? Thanks and glad it turned out so well for you!
Also, looks like you have moved away since then?
Next question. I need a new stock DW turbo flywheel to go along with the clutch. Both dealers list the turbo version at 1600 and the NA version at 1200 or so. A private shop has it for $1050. Any reason to not buy this outside the dealership as well?

Picked up the car the Monday before we were to move to an new state (on Friday). Drove the car home. Trans very notchy, hard to shift due to brand new synchros. Drove the car two days later (Wednesday) about 6 miles. Ran great. Trans getting better just as the tech (Duane) said it would. Thursday evening, about 5 pm, need to run to a FEDEX drop box to drop some home closing documents. Get about 200 feet and hear a terrible noise. Definitely the trans. Call the shop. Talk with the service manager Jack at Porsche of Arlington (this is where the work was done in the first place). He is very concerned and asks to have the car dropped off there. I call Porsche of North America and have the car flat-bedded to them. We move the next day, leaving the car at PoA with no plan on reuniting it with me in place.
Trans had some bad bearings that were not an issue on the first rebuild. Replaced. Some other parts were replaced as a preventative measure. Basically, I have a new trans at this point. Front headlights develop condensation. Replaced under warranty. Passenger airbag cover is not flush with dash. Replaced under warranty. I ship them my 997 SSK which they install free.
Talked with Jack. His shop is going to foot the bill to transport the car to me in Connecticut. Should be back in my garage next week. And that is what a good service manager does.
UPDATE: Good timing on the question. We did move from Virginia to Connecticut. The rest of the story goes like this:

WoW, very nice!! Where do you plan to have it serviced here?

Yeah, let me know how it looks! Jack is a good guy.
My understanding is that not fixed, it will get worse and ruin the synchro(s) and the gear set. My sychros were replaced and 1-3rd gear sets were replaced due to wear.
Car is finally done and in the garage. Had a dead battery when it finally got here so threw a new one in there. Seems to be running pretty good. The 997 SSK is a transformational upgrade. Really incredible. In comparison, the stock 996 shifter is complete rubbish. The dealer installed that free. Very nice.
All done with the second gear issue. Now, on to installing that Fabspeed exhaust!

Great news Sam! Glad she's finally back home. I never had a chance to make it over there as my car is laid up in my garage right now with some unknown engine issue. There's a thread for that...
Thanks again for the positive report on PoA... I'm sure I'll be doing business with them at some point down the road!
