Any opinion on using a Renntech ecu on a 996tt
I just bought my 2003 911 turbo, all stock with only 15000 miles, I want to increase the power and a ecu seems to be the best way. I won a free Renntech ecu but I don't want it if it is experimental. Renntech has a great reputation with Mercedes but are relatively new to Porsche. Has anyone heard what they can do for Porches?
No way. This is not a "plug in chip and add exhaust and intake" market any more, custom tuning is the only way to get the best performance for your investment. In your case, your investment is zero so I would expect the same for the performance..
Best case, it works great and is the best thing since OBDII cable flashing...
Worst case, you blow a very expensive engine up.

first off there is no renntech ECU, they list on their site ECU tuning so they are flashing it id imagine using softronic. so it could be the same flash as other vendors are selling more info is needed their website sucks if you dont own a mercedes.
BTW your searching for ECU Tuning/Flash for your car not a new ECU its not replaced.
but if you want my recomendation on who is the best there are 3 Protomotive, Switzer and EPL

Find out who wrote their software. If it's not an established Porsche tuner, I would advise against it.

Hartmut Feyhl is the owner of Renntech. The guy is off the charts with Mercedes. He built a CLK 60 (bored and stroked NA motor) for me back in 1999. The car was featured in Motor Trend. He was also the first one I took my 996tt to back in 2001 when no one could make 500 hp. He made the 500 hp with it.
I would not say Porsche is Helmut's forte as most of his work is with MB. However, he is conservative about making his motors live and I would not worry about it doing damage to your engine.

CVJ; Thanks for the input. I was looking for people with experience using Renntech. I know they are the best when it comes to Mercedes and figured they would not start on Porsche unless they could further their reputation now with Porsche. I would like as much input from any members that have Porsches that have tried Renntech. Thanks for finding this post and if you can direct me to others that would be helpful.
Gator-
When you've been here a while, you will figure out whos who... we've all never heard of renntech 996TT ECU programming- which is a BIG negative. Then cjv posts about his experience with them... This is one of those rare instances when a single person's input may override all else. Just saying.... pretty interesting once you know all the players.
So, will you have a "relationship" with Renntech? Or just "here's the tune, off you go"? This will make a difference. Tuning in tied to the car, the mods, etc, etc. Without support is it just... well, Upsolute.
I view tuning as a choice of do you want to work with, who CAN you work with, and not so much 'how many HP can I get".
As you read through all the "what tune should I get", start paying attention to the 'soft' issues: changes to components, fine tuning the programs, who do you talk to when there are issues, who does YOUR troubleshooting, and who are THEY comfortable with....

Thanks for the input. I hope to learn more about the key people on this site. I will be working with Wes at Titian Motors and Renntech also. Depends on the Mods I will be doing. I am going to schedule the Renntech software upgrade. The owner is going to be involved with my upgrade also, he wants it done right. Again I don't take it for granted the advice you guys are giving me. I will learn as we go. I went on a Porsche Rally this last Sunday it was great to be with other PCA members.

GatorPorsche,
It has been awhile since I have spoken to the gang at Renntech. I am not sure of the first name, but as best I can recall ....... Jim Riely? is he still with Helmut?
When you talk to them tell them Chad said hi. They will remember me.
