factory wheel questions...
I know that the GT2 factory wheels are 12" wide in the rear and the 996tt is 11" wide in the rear (guessing the fronts are the same width for both cars?), other than that are there any difference between the GT2 and the 996TT factory wheels? Are they both the same style and hollow spoke twist design? How about offsets, are they different.
Although the GT2 wears 235 F and 315 R I'm guessing you could run that same combo on the 996tt without issue, correct? Would you need the GT2 factory wheels to mount these or could they be mounted on the 996tt wheels?
The reason I ask is that the car I am looking at is a 996tt but I have the option of getting it with the GT2 wheel set...
thanks

996GT2 wheels and tires will bolt onto a 996TT no problem. Although GT2 235 and 315 tires will fit on 996TT wheels, I wouldn't do it, I don't think the offset is the same and your sidewalls will not be properly supported by the narrower wheels.

Good info...how do the Gt2 wheels look much better than the 996TT wheels...I always thought they looked close to the same or similar, can anyone post detailed pics of each or explain? Are they heavier because they don't have hollow spokes vs. the 996tt wheels which do? Or were the hollow spokes on the 996tt an option where that car came with solid spoke turbo twists with 11" rear wide wheels standard, and the GT2 came with the same set just with a 12" wide rear wheel...?

There are 2 different GT2 wheels for the 996 variant - one with 5 spokes (the standard looking turbo twist) and a 10 spoke style that is much more rare.
I'm running the 10 spoke 997 variant in 19" on my car (very similar to the 996 variant):

Wow those are rare don't think I've ever seen them...I like the 996 GT2 wheel sizes with the wider more aggressive setup BUT they weigh just so much more.both the 10 spoke and turbo twist style..maybe good for driving in the city and that's about it...wouldnt have to worry about potholes that's for sure!

Here's some pics of the regular Turbo Twist Hollow Spoke wheels and then the GT3 wheels when I was swapping them over in my driveway. Stock GT3 wheels will be painted silver and not dark like these ones.

decisions, decision lol...well hopefully I pick a good one which has some performance benefit and would still be a good choice for the street and the occasional track outing to instruct some students at a PCA event ..

GT2 wheels are decent upgrade. But they are super heavy!! GT2 wheels are not hollow spoke. They are a bolt on to the TT and the 235/315 combo are s great match in terms of diameter.
You can pick up set of OZ wheels from Tire Rack that are 12" rear and 9" front and weight significantly less for $1600-1700

These will look great on any GT2 996TT or 997TT.
Porsche OEM ALL BLACK GT2/GT3RS Factory Wheels, with TPMS Valves, painted Porsche Center Caps, and Michelin Pilot Sport CUPs N0’s.
Fronts: 8.5 x 19 offset 53 with 235/35’s
Rears: 12.0 x 19 offsets 51 with 305/30’s (the lower the ET number, the close to wheel fits the fender.. i.e. flush)
Acceptable tire size/range for the fronts: 225-245 & 295-335 for the rears.
Vehicle application: 996 wide body, 997 widebody. Not sure of tire clearance for narrow body cars.

So right now I am down to 2 sets to choose from if/when I take deliver of the car...the 996tt turbo twists that came with the car originally from the factory (buying the car from original owner) OR a set of SSR GT3 wheels measuring 18x8.5 and 18x11.5 ...these are silver centers and polished lip, real nice looking wheel with Porsche factory centercaps, with this set he will throw in a spare center section in case I crack any of the centers, howver these wheels are apparently very strong and have a 2 peice bolted design, I did some google research lol.
He is keeping the GT2 factory twists to put back on his GT2 because he's selling that one also. He is getting a 997 GT2 and a 997tt for himself and his wife respectively to replace these two outgoing 996 vehicles...
